Thanks for the link Barbara - I stopped having lilies in the garden years ago because of the things - I am interested to see what they have to say.

I could be filling that out as a part-time job with all the extra lilies I've planted this year - I shall be on a daily hunt from the end of this month! Interesting research, thanks for that Barbara x Tig

Thanks Barbara. I noticed that the Daily Mail had an article on Lily Beetles this morning, and as usual they gave the impression that they had just appeared overnight. We are not 'up north' here in South Lincolnshire and we are certainly not 'down south' either yet we have had lily beetles for three or four years to my knowledge.

I've got quite a few lillies in my garden and will let them know if I see any of the dreaded beetles.

I was at a large inside Garden Show today and they had some magnificent lily bulbs to be bought.
I discussed the lily beetle with one of the "gardeners" and she said that a member of the public had suggested that Lavender can stop them......anyone had any experience of this??

What do you do with the lavender RF? cut the flowers off or leaves and place around the bottom or just grow it nearby? I wonder.

Grow it nearby is what I understood LG. However I had a feeling it could be the same situation as with having Lavender near roses to repel aphids - if it is a bad year for aphids/lily beetle then they will come no matter what one does.

I caught my first pair today (I have learned that there is never only one! ) - munching on an emerging lily ... they have gone to lily beetle hell, they must have been very bad in a former life, they are even a devilish colour x Tig

My lillies haven't started showing yet so I haven't yet seen any of the little beasties skulking around. As far as the lavender thingy goes, I've had a nice thick clump of lavender right next to one of my "clumps"of lillies and that didn't have any effect whatsover as far as keeping them away as far as I could tell. I have lillies in other areas of the garden with no lavender nearby and the beetles activity with those ones was no different there than where I had the lavender. From what I understand, the reason why they are spreading so quickly is that in the first place people used to mistake them for lady bugs and so used to leave them alone, and secondly, as imports (yes, they're "imports" here as well) they don't have any natural predators. I won't mention the fact that another reason is that they seem to spend a heck of a lot of time"frollicking" with each other. You hardly ever see one without it being on top of another. I know one thing though, I love my lillies and I adamantly refuse to give them up because of the bl**dy little miscreants. I'll continue patrolling my lillies, picking them off and stomping on them with a great sense of satisfaction as I see them.

I don't mind stomping on them but I have stopped squishing anything between my fingers these days. I squished an aphid years ago, totally forgetting a little cut that I had on my finger and it stung and swelled up - I was in a mess for days.
The one thing that I hate is the mess that they leave....horrible.

I went on lilly patrol yesterday but thankfully did'nt come across any beetles. Did find quite a few greenfly 'tho. I squished them all, good job I'd not read your thread Rf. I've lots of little cracks in my hands and did'nt have gloves on, I rarely do when I'm gardening.

Well it's been the worst year for lilly beetles in my garden.Although I did my best by going on regular patrols they've managed to destroy quite a few of my lillies and I came back the other day to find the yuccky brown mess on a few of the leaves too. For sure I'll be lifting my lillies at the end of this season and growing them in pots next year where I can keep a better check on them.

I always knock them into my hand and run to a stepping stone , it's littered with bits and pieces of them, I never found that other one yesterday I couldn't do a finger and thumb, but boy do they make me mad.
