Olaf Schachtschneider of Angelface/Entene Florale fame has asked me for a favour and I hope you can all help..
He is an England lover and knows most of it very well as he worked in the UK and has visited it, just about every other year for ages.. He and his wife and 2 kids want to have 2 weeks holiday in 2014 - the problem is where...
The choice has fallen back on places that he doesn't know...he would love the Isle of Wight, Devon and possibly Wales...but coastal areas if possible.. There has to be gardens that can be visited in the area and places to visit with the kids. He is looking for a self catering type holiday - just a small flat - a bed for them and a pull out sofa for the kids. They are out all day, everyday and then get back, eat and fall in bed until the next day, so it doesn't have to be the Ritz - just clean!!
2014 is a long way away but he would like to have booked by the end of this year and the school holidays arer the end of July to beginning of September for that year.
Can anyone give me hints, tips, links - especially about Gardens to visit in the area.. I have been out of the UK too long really now to suggest where he could visit..
Many thanks RF

I've been mulling this one over, Rf, and think that he might like the North Devon/West Somerset area, possibly around Porlock? From there, you can get to several NT gardens, plus an easy trip to RHS 'Rosemoor'. There will also be plenty of gardens open for the NGS all summer. The small 'Yellow Book' for the area is free - it comes out in February, when I could send you one. We'll be in it again next year! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/embarassed.gif i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif Minehead is a small town a few minutes up the coast, and the W. Somerset steam railway starts from there, 26 miles into lovely countryside all the way into the beautiful Quantock Hills. The children would love the beach etc at Minehead. Lynton & Lynmouth are a few minutes drive in the other direction in Devon. Then there's a great place to visit at Combe Martin, a few miles further on. (Dinosaurs!) The scenery is amazing, with Exmoor on the doorstep. I could have a google (or he could!) to see what sort of accommodation he'd prefer. As it's a holiday area, he should find all sorts of types of places to stay, including rentals and B&B. P.S. We live 25 miles away so I know the area well. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif

Would he consider a static caravan? There are several sites around, all on the coast. It's not for everyone, I know. I was just wondering.

We have moors, too! ;D Love going up to Sychnant Pass, walking up there and you can see the hills, the mountains, valleys and the sea at the same time. And I'll have you know it doesn't always rain! In fact, in 1976 I believe there was at least 5 minutes of dryness ;D

Rf, I googled for holiday accomodation at Minehead, and also at Porlock, and plenty of choice came up - flats included. It all depends on what he wants and when.

Will do Geranium, - thanks all - have had a mail from Olaf saying that he is looking around for somewhere to stay in the places that have been mentioned. He would stay in a caravan but his wife wouldn't entertain the idea....

I don't blame her, really, although the static ones are so big they seem like a bungalow inside! What I don't like about those sites is the way they put the vans so close to each other.

Isle of Wight is always nice...!!

The Tenby area is wonderful - the beaches are great and the scenery is amazing. Lots to do, but I'm not up on gardens to visit from there.

Saw Olaf yesterday and both your area Geranium and Tenby in Wales are well up - I think it will basically land in the end at getting somewhere to stay.
Both he and his OH do not want a B & B unless it is a big room and they can all sleep together...that is why they go for small flats. Double bed for them and sofa pull out for the kids.... They don't want the kids in a separate room..

I'm sure that's possible. I found all sorts of accommodation when I checked the Minehead Tourist Office. Do you know which month he wants to come over?
If he is able to miss the British school holiday period, he'll find it much easier, and cheaper, too. It's usually about July 20th - ish until the first week in September. I can check the Somerset ones for you.

School holidays are late in 2014 so will coincide with the English holidays I think...end July to beginning of September...
