I go to loads of open gardens ( not usually the Yellow Book ones as I find them often to be too costly ) I like a good variety of plants and lots of flowers but my "must haves" are a plant stall, tea and cakes, no weeds ( or very few) and a garden with different aspects so you can't see it all at once and have to go on a "journey" Good luck to those opening theirs this year

I'm surprised you said that - We charge £3.50, children free, Auricula. Is that too much do you think? We haven't put it up since we first started opening. Most public gardens cost a lot more. Thanks for the encouragement...

I'm very much a cheapskate Geranium I mainly go to NT gardens ( we're members) or RHS partner gardens which are BOGOF. We often do "open village gardens" which are £5 each but you get about a dozen gardens for that ( 16 in the last one) but the YB ones around here are usually about £3.50 - £4. so yours sounds about right

That's good. I'd have been surprised if it was too high! Some gardens in the YB have raised their entry price this year. We'll have to consider it if we carry on opening.

I'll have to get "mates rates" if I ever make it to deepest, darkest Somerset But, however tightfisted I am ( and I was born in Yorkshire ) I'd never eat at Bridgewater Services - I think they're the most desolate that I've ever visited Are you on track for opening? Do you do the whole weekend to make it worthwhile?

Nope - I go to church on Sundays, so opening isn't possible then, Auricula. We pick the first two Thursdays in June, normally, as the roses on the house look good (not this year!) and the bed of Geranium x magnificum is gorgeous - again, not this year! There's a national NGS festival on the w/end of 15th/16th June this year, and they wanted us to open then, so I agreed to an extra day. (FOOL!) The farmer across the lane lends us his field for parking, and opening a week apart is ideal for him, and not too stressful for us. I'm running to keep up with my 'to-do' list! I agree 100% about Bridgwater Services! By the way, if you do ever pass through Somerset on the M5, do come and visit anyway, open day or not. I'll get the kettle on.

Thanks Geranium, I may well take you up on that sometime I never think of gardens being open other than at weekends, but I suppose you can still attract the rich, old, feral and feckless - none of whom work Seriously, I wondered if you were part of this NGS festival? I really hope you do well and that the sun shines Your garden always looks lovely so you should be able to relax and enjoy the days

Well, it really wasn't worth opening on Saturday, mostly due to the weather in the morning, I think. OH went round to collect all the signs yesterday and some horrible person had ripped two of them off the posts and taken them. It could be why people didn't come if it was done on Friday. We are very remote...Aren't people nasty sometimes. Don't they know it's all for charity?

For goodness sake, what a stupid thoughtless thing to do Geranium. Will you have different plans for next year?

No, I think we'll stick to our usual two Thursdays in June. Ladygardener. The Saturday was a one-off, part of w/end Festival of Gardens when as many NGS gardens as possible were supposed to open. We'll have to put the signs out at the road junctions so people can find us and hope the person leaves them alone.

I take mine with the ordinary camera Geranium. I set up a You Tube account and uploaded it there, then posted a link. Not sure if Tinypics supports video uploads Oops missed the next page - what a miserable thing to do removing your signs! Perhaps it was children?

Where's this video then? You'll have a record then of exactly what the garden looked like at point of opening 2013.

Too late - the weather has changed. ::)I can't be doing with all this techie stuff, I shall remain a dinosaur. Eva brought another daughter to see the garden yesterday. She made a donation and bought some plants, too. It all helps!

I went on-line and booked our open days for next year yesterday. We're opening on Thursdays 5th and 12th June. I'm not opening on the Saturday, even though the NGS is doing the Festival of Gardens again - it was a lot of aggro and we only had 18 people. It always seems so early to have to fill in the forms, but they have to edit them and get the Yellow Book published in the New Year, as well as all the posters etc. they have to produce.
