I think I have broken a toe. Any advice ? I don't know what to do with it. Seems pointless to go to a&e I'm sure they are busy enough without me limping up there. They can't do much with it anyway can they? It hurts tho :-(

No they wont do anything PG, just painkillers, I did mine once I found putting a piece of lint underneath it strapped on with tape was helpful, so sorry your in pain, I did mine jumping over the dog, how did you do yours then.?

A plant stand dropped on my big toe on September 2nd 1998 (you can tell I haven't got over it ) and it was broken but the hospital couldn't do anything about the break, they just bandaged it up as the toe nail had been bashed off . Pain killers and rest PG! Easier said than done - the rest bit!

I agree, it's not worth going to A&E as Barbara says a bit of something soft around and under it might help it to ease and some painkillers as well of course. Will you be able to rest and take some time off work?

A piece of granite fell out of our drystone wall onto mine about 3yrs ago ( no date - I'm more resilient than Jasmine ) and broke 2 toes. Just rest it when you can and take the strongest painkillers you've got

Which toe is it? Perhaps it is just badly bruised rather than broken prodigal gardener Did you bash the nail? That I find is the most painful bit of anything to do with digits, if the nail goes black at the bottom you may need to go and get it lanced (the nail not the toe ) I agree with the advice already given, and would also try taping it to the toes either side to stop you bending them and help it set if it is broken. Has your rash behind your ears gone now?

Caught my toe on the corner of my wardrobe yesterday morning rushing about tidying up. Bloody housework is lethal !

I know, housework can be fatal, that's why I don't do too much of it Some nice support socks could help it heal, just be very careful not to bang it again!

All I'm seeing this morning is photos of bits of bodies! I'm sorry you've bashed your toe, prodigal gardener. It sounds painful. Did you manage to sleep last night? I agree with everyone else, I'm afraid - it ain't worth sitting in A&E for hours - they won't do anything.

It will stop hurting sooooo much in a couple of days PG. Any more body parts and I think we'll get closed down, this is supposed to be plant picture place.

Caught my toe on the corner of my wardrobe yesterday morning rushing about tidying up. Bloody housework is lethal ! I prescribe minimal housework for the rest of the foreseeable and plenty of rest and painkillers PG. I remember them saying to me at hospital that most folk break a toe or toes in their lives and nothing is done except a course of antib's if the break is near an open wound. Is the skin cut on the side of your toe?

Post by prodigal gardener on Jul 30, 2013 8:03:33 GMT
It's not cut or anything just swollen, painful and going a smashing shade of green now. It's black underneath and still won't bend but I will manage. Can't wear me heels tho. Most disgruntled Not bothered with a&e although people keep telling me horror stories about broken toes. Charming !! If its no good in a few weeks I might go. Just don't fancy sifting up there with all the junkies and nutters. I spend enough time with idiots at work !! I'll give it a fortnight !

You have to walk on your heel keeping the toe in the air so to speak, the A&E wont do nowt to help you take my word for it.

Try using a walking stick to keep the foot as still as possible - put most of your weight on t'other foot.

WALKING STICK !!!! I can't do that. People will think I'm on the sick. And this lot at work wouldn't take the p out of that at all would they. Ive already had my name changed to una (stubbs - get it ! ) No thanks I will manage ! x

Has the bruising gone down now? If it hasn't you could try some gentle massage to the area to increase the blood flow - some Ibuprofen gel might ease the discomfort too, if all else fails I recommend a zimmer

Tig, she almost exploded at my walking stick suggestion - watch out for flying objects in your direction when she reads yours!

I was wondering how you were doing r.e. your toes prodigal gardener . I was going to suggest some Arnica.

You see, we can be seriously helpful sometimes, @prodigal gardener. I use arnica on bruises, and it works. Well worth a try. Good thinking, Ladygardener.
