What accompanyments do you have with certain foods, some I see as traditional and I guess they are going to vary from region to region. I'll start with....................... With Lamb chops we always have mint sauce and Onion sauce with the veg Runner Beans we have Crab Apple jelly if we have any Chicken we have bread sauce and stuffing Over to you  |

I can't abide "sloppy "food so we never have sauces or gravy ( although sometimes I relent and make Bisto granules for OH )

"Sloppy" food - good heavens Auricula a good sauce isn't sloppy and it makes a meal fantastic... Right - in the UK it would be: Chicken with bread sauce and sage and onion Pork with apple sauce Lamb and mint sauce of course Beef and Yorkies Your onion sauce sounds good - can I have the recipe Chuckles?? here is Germany there is... Kasseler (smoked Pork) and Sauerkraut Rouladen (rolled stuffed beef) and Red cabbage Grunkohl (kale) and Pinkel (wonderful sausages) Bockwurst and potato salad. Strammer Max - smoked raw ham on bread with a fried egg on top. Ham Hock with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes Matjes - soused herring - eaten alone in a bread roll with raw onions or with boiled potatoes and bacon and onions. Liver with apples and onion and boiled potatoes (no bacon) Must be loads more - what about the rest of you?? RF |

Although Yorkshire pudding is supposed to be served with beef if we're having any sort of roast we have Yorkies!

Hate any sauce bar custard ( I lurrrve custard) Rosefriend. Any food which isn't dry is sloppy to me. I hate butter on crumpets for example and if I ate cereals it would be with solid yogurt rather than milk. Can't even abide eggs ( boiled, fried or poached) with runny yolks... Yuk  |

I had an aunt who was just like you Auricula she wouldn't even have gravy on a roast dinner. I'm guilty of preferring most of the sauces to the actual food, especially creamed horseradish sauce, I'll have that on just about anything. The funniest thing with us it that OH only likes bottled mint sauce, the cheaper the better so that it's almost just vinegar, so in the summer months when I've got fresh mint, I end up making 2 lots of sauce when we have lamb I also love things like red current jelly or Cranberry sauce with roast meat, which OH can't stand.

When I ate meat I never had gravy on roast dinners Jilly. I love, dry Yorkshire puddings  yummy My kids didn't have gravy on their food as little'uns cos I never thought to make it  |

The thing is Auricula, do they like gravy now. I sometimes think it's the things you're brought up eating. Despite having a cupboard full of fancy salad dressings & things like balsamic vinegar, given the opportunity both my Mum & I would smother any type of salad with plain old Heinz salad cream. In fact I've been know (especially when we were really poor) to have salad cream sandwiches |

Very interesting looks like some interesting things to try. Are your casseroles and soups that you love not "sloppy" food then Auricula  Onion sauce is just a basic white sauce with onions sauted in butter added to it Rosefriend. Love the sound of some of the german combinations but you can keep the Strammer Max Yorkshire pudding with oven baked sausages for me Jasmine, infact any meat meal is complemented with a good yorkie  OH was very intrigued by your lamb and champ LadygardenerSalad cream sandwiches Jilly I remember them, we must of been poor too . We did occasionaly accompany them with cucumber Peaches and cream spring to mind tonight along with Rhubarb and custard Oh and egg and cress sandwiches and then theres the good old BLT This thread could go on for ever |

We eat egg and diced onion sandwiches over here Chuckles , one of my favourite but I like mine with mayonaise while Ruth eats hers with Heinz salad cream only. |

This made me smile - whenever we went on a picnic, even in much later years, Mum made egg butties. Hardboiled eggs and diced onions with mayonnaise - all mixed together with salt and pepper. My OH loves it as well and I still do it... I also love the taste of Heinz salad cream - I get a small bottle when I order from the English Shop once a year....luverly. Ever since you mentioned the champ Ladygardener we have been eating it - wonderful - and with loads of stews and gravy in winter...fantastic - sausages and champ maybe..!! RF |

Oh I'm so glad you and OH have been converted to Champ Rosefriend. Delighted too that your Mum has shared the egg and onion sandwiches, when I first went to England to live, people were always really surprised that I mix egg with onion. We seem to share at least some tastes Rosefriend. |

Champ is mashed potaotes. Spring Onions chopped up into little bits and heated in a little milk. Add the champ and milk to the mashed cooked potatoes and add a big dollop of butter. It's really delicious Jasmine. |

I am thinking of champ and sausages Ladygardener! Thanks for the 'recipe'! OH calls putting things in the oven 'hotting up' and not cooking Auricula. I like 'hotting up' - it's quick! He also has a bloomin' cheek as he neither cooks nor hots up! |

I couldn't eat anything swimming in "gravy", I tip that down the sink |

I love stewed rhubarb with roast pork, and I like stewed goosegogs with roast lamb, like Jilly I can have horseradish with anything and I love stuffing with added fruuit and nuts, none of which I would ever serve in a sloppy way. |

You can have Mayo and or Ketchup but both are the rage at the moment!! You actually ask for pommes (chips) red/white!! Hahahahaha - keep taking the tablets Auricula - one of these days you will be sitting down to a wonderful roast with thick gravy, pleased that I don't have to cook for you, it would drive me mad!!
