I got this free from the garden centre, but no-one seems to know what it could be . I think there may be two or more things all together, but I'm not sure where to plant it until I have an idea of what it is!!

I've googled and it could be Knautia (Scabious) it could be either perennial or annual theinsidegardener. As Andy says, it could be a poppy either.

Eek, didn't realise that owdboggy. Might just plant it in the communal border across the road til we see what happens with it!

Thanks andy Ladygardener, I do like the knautia, but I can't afford too much space to it. Would like it to be the poppy now! But thinking of the gc gardens, I think it's probably more likely to be the knautia. Just read this: A single field scabious plant can produce around 2,000 seeds and the seeds can remain in the soil for a number of years. It's definitely going in the communal border!

Knautia is still a lovely plant theinsidegardener and now that you know what it looks like you can always pull up the ones that you don't want. I have Knautia in two places and got 3 babies this year - dunno whether it has anything to do with our winters. I am even getting some more seeds from Tig in pastel colours... Poppies on the other hand take over the whole of the garden for me - I had thousands of plants to start with this year!! Still wouldn't be without either!! Rf

Well the wait is over .... the first flower has opened, and of course it is a knautia of sorts ..... the colour is .... purple! The light was very bright when I took this picture, it's actually a little bit darker than this. I actually love it now that I have it, and would be happy to give it a little corner to make friends! As you say Rosefriend now I know what to look out for I can keep it in check!

theinsidegardener it's done really well for you and is a lovely plant. If it makes babies I'd love one lol. Make the most of the weather today, it's all set to change tomorrow and will rain until next week.

Thanks Rosefriend and Ladygardener, I'm delighted with it. I didn't expect it to flower again until next year RF, nice to know what colour it will be now though. Of course I'll keep you in mind for its babies Ladygardener, that's a few times you've mentioned it so I know you're very keen lol.
