Will post when its planted No, you don't sound cruel at all wendya - it is as I said to the neighbour with the football playing daughter - " what right has your child to ruin my hobby, to break things and generally make a mess of everything. If it happens it gets paid for"!! We do have a Plan B and C and heavens knows what, but it is heartbreaking when something is flowering so beautifully and a football or a pair of feet stamp all over it...not to mention the money getting it in the first place.. That's a lovely rose wendya hope it does really well for you and those bad kids leave it alone. Although with the sharp thorns it has I'd guess they won't go near it.

Thank you both, lets hope the prickly rose works but agree Rosefriend they just dont realise the time effort and money put into gardens. Lets hope your footballer soon finds another hobby herself.

Furious my holly is smashed up, i went out for day to a dog show yesterday came back and trampled, I could kill today, so if you hear of a woman locked up for grabbing kids its me, i feel like tampling on the kids heads. I forgot to oil of bike shed I reckon they jumped on it head from above, awful creatures.

Pity you forgot the oil - I was just in the back garden and saw something and a couple of small branches are on the ground dead ....could have been the wind I suppose but... I can't remember ever doing things like that as a kid and I was never hit - a look was enough to stop me messing about but then it would never have occurred to me to trash something... RF

I am thinking now of planting a rose forest, my question is would a rose survive in a real shady area, or would i need to buy a special kind of rose? as there is no way they would jump on this bit if i planted roses all over it, im sure of that. I will stop them some way im determined

I am thinking now of planting a rose forest, my question is would a rose survive in a real shady area, or would i need to buy a special kind of rose? as there is no way they would jump on this bit if i planted roses all over it, im sure of that. I will stop them some way im determined Roses, ideally, need 6 hours plus to do what they want to do naturally and that is to flower their socks off - however there are roses bred for shady areas and something wild like a dog rose (Rosa Canina) will still throw some flowers up and has some lovely thorns. Wiki says : It is a deciduous shrub normally ranging in height from 1–5 m, though sometimes it can scramble higher into the crowns of taller trees. Its stems are covered with small, sharp, hooked prickles, which aid it in climbing. The leaves are pinnate, with 5-7 leaflets. The flowers are usually pale pink, but can vary between a deep pink and white. They are 4–6 cm diameter with five petals, and mature into an oval 1.5–2 cm red-orange fruit, or hip. If there is a chance that things are going to be stamped on then I would go for cheap stuff until you can assess if the little devils darlings are going to trash the roses or not.. Check Google - wild roses will also give you thorns and hips which would help the birds in autumn etc...perhaps that is a possibility.. RF

I have a rosa canina (dog rose) growing in shade. It flowers fine, then gets nice fat red hips, and is soooo prickly it would not be a plant to mess with! I would be tempted to go out into the countryside and look for some brambles. Cut and dry the canes (or they will root and be a menace) and then use some heavy duty gardening gloves and poke some stems in your troughs, and maybe weave some through the railings. I've bought a rambling rose Albertine which Jilly reliably informs me is very prickly, but has nice scented flowers. Perhaps another option?

Never thought of it but a fantastic way to be able to plant what you want whilst keeping the little buggas at bay wendya - certainly worth a try I would think, and brambles are not to be messed around with...they will only try it once...unless they try and get them out, but without gloves it might be a "bloody" job !! Brambles and oil - maybe with some chilli for good luck...wow - what a combination!! RF

Thanks Rosefriend and and Tig i will look into this rose canina, as there is some light there or sure my parancantha's would not grow. i really dont mind if the rose did not flower as long as it has big spikes Thats a good idea about brambles too Well my problem this weekend has not been nasty kids. But Valeriums eaten to their stalks it looks like a plaque, they have been eaten by catapillars small pink ones and there were also black dots all over them some kind of eggs i think. Looks such a mess i have had to remove 3 big roots of valeriums i cant have them looking so bad so now only a few valeriums, which is maybe best as was taking light away from everything and very messy. My problem, is now penstamons, do people tie them to poles they are laying all over the top of the planters, im thinking animals may lay on them at night? maybe cats or foxes. All a very big learning curve after me going mad a month or 2 ago about aphids on valeriums now i have had to remove. But im sure i will get there with the correct plants in the end with a bit of help from all of you

I have never tied my penstemons to canes but I do sometimes use the cheap plant supports in front of them if they flop forward onto the paths. As there is the fence at the back of your troughs, what I would do is get some green plastic coated garden wire, wrap it round a bar of the fence and secure it, then loop it round the penstemons and fixed to secure to another bar of the fence. I do something similar with tall plants down one side of our back garden. That will be cheap and will also be easy to work around, and it might be a barrier if animals are bedding down in there.

Rosa Canina just purchased for the darker spot Rosefriend thanks for advise i may well wrap brambles round this rose tree with sticks in the ground as though it is more grown than it is, so there will be no space to jump from above until it gets bigger and spreads out.

hehe Will keep you updated, now for the pensatamen problem seems they are yellow ones small yellow buds but all laying flat now 3ft tall i think i will take a pic to show as Tig suggested tying to back to railings with green wire, but not sure it will work But i have some good news i have planted 2 snow berry cuttings taken off their mother plant and doing well, pics to come.

Ok here is the penstamen problem no way I can tie to railings. What is the best solution a hair cut Most of my Vareriums now cut down to root. caterpillars have eaten everything and left long sticks they are wriggling all over the place now disgusting but know its nature. ive tried to remove catapillars out of ground. these are the only ones left on other side not as bad but nearly eaten Do you suggest i cut down too? Taking no chances with this lovely and snails i put a copper ring round it, not sure what the plant is can someone tell me, its doing well, not sure if snails like this though fury leaves. My new Snowberry bush cutting

The pink plant is Lychnis coronaria.

Slugs and snails hardly ever touch the lychnis coronaria in my garden, they don't tend to like hairy leaved plants. And it self seeds by the zillion, so you will have plenty in years to come wendya If you hard prune back the penstemon you are unlikely to get many flowers. I would still have a go at tying it back to the railings, perhaps with some garden twine and a few stems at a time until you can see some sort of order. It seems valerian is a favoured food of several types of caterpillar, in a way you are encouraging wildlife, although it is a disappointment when you wanted to create a pretty flowery area rather than an all you can eat buffet for butterfly babies

Thanks that is good to know they dont like the new plant :)oh they self seed wonderful news, i like these as see in the graveyard, so bought without knowing their name. Im going to get some long stakes , then maybe twine them together, if i cant hold penstamens they will have to be chopped, shame but it looks a mess. Well i ended up cutting back all valeriums, i have just left 3 roots balls showing not sure if i will remove them or not yet, as like them,, but the trouble i have gone through with them, with garlic spraying ect with aphids isnt good and now a plague of catapilarrs, i have never in my whole life seen so many. But seems not only mine as down the road some really nice ones that were perfect last week are now bear like locust has been at them i wonder what caterpillars they are, so many Thanks for advise
