I let mine get on with it, they seem to do OK, although a bit of extra fertiliser like growmore pellets will put some nutrients back onto the old compost.

I buy one fresh bulb from the greengrocers. That usually gives me lovely plants. If not I might try if I can get one of my own to work. Sometimes when harvest has not been good like this year, it is better to start fresh. Funny I never bought it from a seed merchant.

I just grow mine in the soil with bonemeal sprinkled around, stevemc, old compost with a little bonemeal will probably be fine.

In order to get the sweetcorn in yesterday I had to harvest this elephant garlic, there are several still growing, they were trying to flower so I nipped the buds off. This should keep us going for a week though. Beside it were four bulbils so I've replanted them. The ordinary garlic is starting to go brown, could be lack of water rather than them being ready though.

Yup. They do say we are going to get a tru Winter. That would be good as Garlic gives better cloves after real cold. We’ll see.

Barbara, Tig, Dutchy, Ladygardener, Guess what - I have forgotten to plant my Garlic and now we have frost and probably snow. I suppose it would be stupid to plant them in small pots and later in the garden....they would shoot in the house and a hard frost in early Spring could finish them off.... I am sooo annoyed with myself...

Put them into your gh as soon as the frost goes away, we've had frost most of this week but it won't do them any harm Rosefriend. Ours are in pots/cells outside and will be planted when the bed is ready for them, they already have green shoots.

Growing Garlic in Pots Garlic can be successfully grown in pots. Use a fresh standard growing medium. Typically plant 3 cloves to a 6" pot, 6 to an 8" pot and 8 - 10 to a 10" pot. Be sure to use pots with at least 6" depth to allow adequate freedom for the roots. Rosefriend, This is from the SR site.

And to add to that. Right now the Garlic does not need light and you have a shed in the back where you can put the pots. They do not mind light frost in a pot and in the shed they will be fine. You can then dig your holes where you want and drop them in later. After all this cold spell will go in a week or 2 or even by January which always sees slightly warmer days and they don't mind sitting and waiting. Have they begun growing?

Barbara, Tig, Dutchy, Ladygardener, Thanks all - been out - I had a big sack of compost and have brought half in to warm up. - got some beakers etc - I will sort them out - got 6 different varieties - some from Austria even and they included one from the Isle of Wight. I will plant them and put them in the spare bedroom, no heating and then in the GH/shed until I can get them out into very large planters... I'll let you know how things go...
