Exactly one year to the day from sending our beloved boy to cat heaven and we still haven't emptied "his" kitchen cupboard. It is the only one without a childproof catch on it.
Guess what? Yup, Baby Brassica found the Iams (dried food), prized open the tin and was happily crunching on them when she was discovered. I think we have now found a possible use for the old bowls, litter tray worming powder etc <evildaddysmiley>

I had to take my lovely cat Stripe to the vet this evening with breathing problems hes been losing a bit of weight too, and has lost his usual appetite... which has always been a tad picky anyway). The vet found it difficult to check his lungs as Stripe is such a softy he automatically purrs loudly whenever hes touched. The vet took his temp and gave him a blood test after taking some of the fur under his chin off, and my poor stripe was quite upset... so upset in fact that he shot back into his pet carrier which he detests. Im sure if he could he would have shut the door behind him! I have to take him back for his results tomorrow, as the vet could not say what might be wrong, as you can imagine everyone is worried about him and the atmosphere at home is one of dread. Stripe is 11 yrs old and very precious to all of us, a real character and the scourge of the local vermin. I cant help thinking hes eaten something that was poisoned ....a rat for instance.

Sweetleaf
I'm sorry to hear about Stripe being unwell. Mrs FA is a vet nurse and they're pretty good at keeping cats healthy and making them better.
Fingers crossed for the results tomorrow.

Lovely photos everyone, I'll try and post some of mine. I've got two 3year old cats, rescues from the RSPCA, brother and sister, Wings and Sky. Wings is a real 'wuss', the original scaredy-cat. He used to catch frogs when he was younger, then discover they didn't taste good and bring them to me to dispose of, but he's never caught anything else as far as I know. His sister, on the other hand, is a mighty hunter, catches fieldmice that live in our compost heap, plays with them for a while and then eats them, except for the heads ! She growls all the time she's got something and it is impossible to rescue the poor mice. Ain't nature wonderful? However I wouldn't be without them now, on dark winter evenings they are better than a hot water bottle. What's wrong with Iams, please? Mine are fed on this, they have to have dried food because they both have gingivitis, lots of tests for nasty diseases when they were young, but both now very healthy, although Sky has no lower front teeth, and Wings only has small ones, something to do with having gingivitis when they were born and the teeth not growing. Sorry this is so long, will try to make messages shorter in future (hangs head in shame smiley) Mary

Gosh so many new posts! C3D - lovely cats Giovanni just made me smile to look at him! What a sweetie.
Karen - more gorgeous cats, I particularly love the photo of Spot on the black blanket! A work of art!
Mary - My previous cats had Iams, Binki loved them. The reason I have been put off them is because Lottie Lady on the other board said that Iams had done some experimentation on animals (or something like that). I don't know the full story and meant to look it up on the web - I did mention it at the vets and the assistant said she had heard something along those lines. So I am wary although need to do a bit more checking up. My parents cat used to catch mice and she always left the head, paws and tail on the back doorstep as a little pressie for them. It looked like some kind of black magic ritual! LOvely names Wings and Sky!

Catquestion: is it right that all ginger cats are toms?
Catstory:
My friend, M ,e-mailed me this yesterday. She was sitting on her balcony Wednesday evening, having a glass of Chablis and thumbing through Radio Times when she saw a cat plummet past. There was a thwack as it hit a balcony lower down and then a thud . M heard her next door neighbour, who was on the phone exclaim "il y a un chat!". She looked over the balcony and saw the cat drag itself under the bushes at the bottom of the building -spiky ones, she said, she's not a gardener! She went downstairs to see what she could do but another cat had got there first so there was a lot of yowling and mewling going on and she couldn't tell which cat was making it. She got the owner of the second cat to come and get hers out of the equation. Catwoman came with Whiskas, which didn't work, went back for roast chicken ,which did, and the second cat was taken home. By this time the person who owned the falling cat appeared. M describes her as a VOB -a very old bat, with walking stick and without hearing aid in! The VOB lives on the fifth floor and had been looking after the cat for her grandson who was on holiday. She was in a right state, as you can imagine. More neighbours appeared, all women although there were a few men making "helpful" observations from their balconies! The decision was made that someone should go in and Catwoman volunteered. She put on her gardening gloves and other neighbours and M tried to hold back branches of the bushes to ease her way. The cat was removed, M rang the emergency vet and someone took the VOB and the cat for treatment. A happy end, or I wouldn't have told the story. The cat had nothing broken, no internal injuries and was given something for shock and some precautionary anitbiotics and antinflams. So it is true they can fall from heights without damage and they must have 9 lives! For those of you who read the bed incident, if my OH had been there, fetching the loppers would have been the appropriate action!

The Stripey One seems a little better this a.m. All those crossed fingers seem to be making a difference....does this count as witchcraft? If so I think Ill start my own coven! <reallyamjokingsmiley> Seriously, keep them crossed for him, I`m not a superstitious person as a rule, but it cant hurt can it?

The Vet rang about stripes blood test and wants to bring him in for a day on tuesday, he says the tests show that stripe is losing protein and this may mean he has kidney disease or a tumour, now he wants to check his urine (hard to collect without confining him) and if this shows no clue, then he`ll look at him with x-rays.
.Blood test and consult already £90+ and the bill will increase next week, but he`s well worth it. To all those who have had their fingers crossed, please continue as he really deserves it, hes a huge softy and wouldnt hurt anything (other than rodents) I wont post any more today as I`m too upset, but Ill look in again soon.

Sweatleaf - do hope Stripe doesn't have anything serious wrong & is soon better. Rhoda - my cat refused to eat any catfood other than Whiskas. And - re the cat litter incident - he was also very thoughtful about being caught short - he obviously knew we wanted him to go in something, so if he couldn't get to a flowerbed or a littertray he used the waste paper bin - or the bath ! 4pygmies - you mention giving cats water instead of milk - this should be normal though - milk is a food for cats, not a drink, so it can be given as well as water but not instead. Toonia - how could you put that poor little mouse on this thread with all these cats?!
