Bearing in mind the perfect mouse in... sorry on a pot in the cat thread I thought I'd start a new thread on the animals left out by the cat and dog people. So anyone, feel free to go into details of your never ending love or hate relationship with any animal but a cat or a dog. I own two goldfish. Taxi who behaves badly and drives everyone nuts with his odd swimming habits and Neo who is always eating too much (as if no new food will ever come). They are almost the first living souls I meet in the morning and they always greet me ( or the food ) with great enthousiasm. Ill try to get a picture with them both in ( Taxi usally ends up looking like a silver blur, yes my gold fish are anything but gold) Dutchy

We have a 55 gal. aquarium of freshwater tropical fish like guppies, white cloud mountain minnows, tetras, rasboras, and bettas. Some of these spend the summer outside in our water features and control the mosquitoes by eating the larvae. We have more birds than we can count.
We did have 4 goldfish and 2 koi but I have not seen them for a few days. They may be hiding under the plants. We also have a number of hermit crabs. I *thought* we had 4 but last night I counted six! Hmmmmmm. Someone has been sneaking more crabs into the crab-o-torium. LOL!

Thanks for the mouse Toonia. I too have a mouse during winter, it lives in a small hollow in our wall. Never see it in the summer. I throw the breakfast breadcrumbs out the backdoor and Jerry as we call him/her doesn't know how fast to go for it after all there is severe competition with the sparrows, starlings, greytits and bluetits. Your purple theme goes well with your little tit. Is it tame? Hm as if purple ever is <laugh> Chickadeedeedeedeedee oops its hard to tell where to stop no offence I hope. Are you sure your crabs don't migrate? Perhaps some relatives heard of your good care and decided to join. Dutchy

I had 2 goldfish when I first left home....Cosmic and Radar...(well it WAS 1975...) Our cat bought home a baby vole once..called it Adrian Vole..but had to take him to the RSPCA as we had no idea how to take care of a baby vole...sadly he died there....
We've also had various guinea pigs (strange mad beasts...very vocal), a bonkers hamster or three and 2 gerbils (Polly and Molly) When one of the hamsters died I thought I'd show my sons (then aged 6 & 3) that death wasn't scary and that their little companion looked really peaceful...so I called them over and let them stroke Beau...I oversaw the funeral then they ran off to play ninja space transformers or sommat...whilst I became grief stricken and had to by hugged and reassured by my (ever patient OH!

Hi Jlottie and CheeryP, I had guinea pigs too as a child. They are great fun and easy to handle ( never managed to break one). I had a huge white one that was indeed very vocal. It was free to roam the house until we got that famous 70ies carpet made of some sort of reed. It hapily tried to munch it all away and wasn't at all happy when my mum banned it to its potato crate. ( Never thought of buying a proper guinea pig home in those days) I fondly remember white whirlwind. Especially the time she was found sitting proudly upright in the fruitbowl after testing everything in there. As a child I quite agreed with her that you always have to test to find the best bit of fruit and hey she just liked the last one best ;D. Dutchy

I no longer have any pets having lost our dog 5 years ago. We do however feed the wild birds with all sorts of things - peanuts, sunflower seeds and hearts, bird seed "pudding", fat balls, etc. In return, they pinch my bean flowers, drink from my water feature instead of their bird bath, and cr@p all over my washing and my car So - I have lots and lots of pigs. Pictures, ceramics, cuddly ones, wooden ones, ones made from bark, onyx, concrete, you name it. I have now lost count of exactly how many but have thought of naming the house the Sty or the Piggery............ ;D

As well as a moggy we have two goldfish - Paul and Ringo. We did have four.....
We are looking to buy either a pair of guinea pigs or a rabbit for LP for her birthday this year and I'm leaning towards bunnies. We have been told it would be better if she were a little older (she's going to be 5) but she'd much prefer a rabbit. I'll keep you posted!

Hi Plocket, good idea to get her a rabbit, they are fun. Mind which one you get and get it from someone you trust. My neighbours ended up enlarging their rabbit house when they found that their little rabbit was really a young, and still growing strong, Flemmish Giant. Take care Dutchy

Eeek - Flemmish Giant!!! Actually David K has recommended a rabbit breeder to me - he lives fairly close to me although we've never met. I'm trusting him 100% and am going to contact this breeder soon with a view to meeting up and discussing concerns, needs etc. I think LP is old enough for a rabbit, and she's adored them for years so I think a guinea pig would be second best. I'm more than happy to take on the responsibility of cleaning and ensuring it's fed every day too. I'll keep you posted with progress!!

Rabbits are the best! I had goldfishes as a kid, but when I grew up and got married one of the first things we did was get a couple of pets - a chipmunk for him and a houserabbit for me... I had a blue rex (female) called George, and himself had a cute little stripy squiggle type creature called George, who was enormous fun too. Eventually we got more houserabbits, called George, George, George and George, not all at the same time though - we never had more than three at once! They're wonderful creatures, and if circumstances were different I'd have another one or two at the drop of a hat!
You will make sure the rabbit's called George, won't you, Plocket?

I had a dwarf lop eared lion head house rabbit called Simba. He ate my carpet and cork flooring... No wonder he snuffed it. I also had a hamster called Little Man.

He sounds ever so cute. I would guess (as I'm researching Rabbits for LP at the moment) that he was small (max 5lb), had floppy ears (not sticky up ones) and masses of fluff around his head and neck. They are ever so cute.
Hia by the way Aprilaydee

Rats - they are brilliant pets. We've done guinea pigs (quite sweet) & hamsters, but rats are the best. Daughter had 2, now down to 1, & they are like little dogs. Very nosy, friendly, bond with you & will play. Highly recommended!

Hia Beejay! That reminds me of a friend I had at school - Tanya - she kept rats and snakes. One day one of the snakes ate one of the rats.

I love snakes!! My darling eldest daughter moved house about 3 years ago and left her 3 rabbits "temporarily" on my lawn. They were very sweet though - a white long eared fluffy thing, a gorgeous big black one with a coat like a mole, and a very shy little brownish one. Over the next year I looked after them and cleaned them and waited for daughter to take them back. Then the rats found them. They dug huge holes under their runs, they gnawed their way through the back of one cage and the rabbits got out repeatedly. I must have spent hours crawling about trying to recapture them and rat proof their houses (not possible). Finally they all escaped one night and were never seen again (apart from the little brown one who a year later is still spotted occasionally). Now daughter has a rescue lunatic dog with a tendency to run away......and smallest daughter is desperate for a guinea pig..........

Hello Aprilaydee, Gosh I never realized something as cute as a lion head rabbit existed. Those upright ones are brimming with "cute and touchable". If you get one Plocket you will have to call it George I think ;D LP might be too small for a rat as companion but these yep go for one. Dutchy

I've no idea where half the disks are at the moment, I'll find them in a few months probably when I'm looking for something else!
