Hi all Could someone please tell me if these Cabbage seedlings are leggy or is it normal and if so what can I do. They are between 3 and 4 inches tall and at the moment residing in my kitchen. I could move them into the greenhouse but I'm wondering if it will be too cold for them at night. Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks. Alicat. x

I'm afraid that you may have problems there Alicat. Yes, the seedlings are very leggy, and as you have GH space available I would move them out straight away. My cabbage seedlings were germinated in the GH and have been outside the whole time. Germinating the seed in the house will get them started that much quicker, but they should really have gone outside at no more than 1 inch high. You may be able to 'get away with it' by setting the plants another inch or so deeper in their pots, but it may just be an idea to sow some more.

Thank you Spruance I thought as much. They were in the greenhouse to begin with but I thought it was too cold so I brought them in. They more or less shot up over night. I'll do what you say with these and sow some more just in case. Thanks again. A. x

Hi Alcat! Sorry, it would seem too much of everything. I would re-sow if I were you. Healthy cabbage seedlings should look about so:

I agree with DK, Alicat There is still plenty of time to sow some more.

Hi again Alicat!
I've been thinking about those 'cabbage seedlings' of yours.
Nothing to add to what has already been said, but just didn't want you to feel disillusioned about them - gardening is a never ending learning curve and some failures are inevitable.
Could I just say that not only brassicas, but almost all vegetable seed is better suited to being grown in the open ground to avoid your present problem?
When people try so hard, It bothers me to hear about it when that things go wrong!
Good luck!

Thanks DK And JL for your replies. I'm not disillusioned by my first attempt, maybe a little embarrassed. But I will be trying again when I get back from our short break. - I think the packet said to plant them in pots first. I will try some in the ground also. If nothing else this thread will show how seedlings should not look and from your photo what they should look like for any new veg growers. Btw. we have planted some veg straight in the ground (turnips and Beetroot) and they are already emerging. Thanks again for replying and I will let you know how I do the second time around. Alicat.

My guess is they are too warm Once they have germinated they should be pricked out and kept in a cool well lit but out of direct sunshine. My advice is two fold; 1) Start again if you have more seeds left! 2) Prick out plants and sink them in the compost so that the seed leaves are about 1/4" above compost level see here; tinyurl.com/2z32f8

I have now sown some more cabbage seeds straight into the veg patch 17.04.07. and have 16 out of 18 germinated. ;D fingers crossed that they continue to grow. Well done you for rescuing yours and yes the veggie folk on here are great. I find I don't need to ask too many questions because they have answered them, like on the Homegrown Veg grower. - It's a great forum with lots of useful/helpfull/ friendly advice. - What more could you ask for. Hi TeeGee Thanks for the advice and the link - I have added it to my favourites for future reference. As I have just said I have sown some more seed straight into the ground but have not done anything as yet with the old seedlings.
