I have actually written down in my gardening yearbook "500 grams JA" - that was on 14 November. And that is not all the crop - we have about 5 or 6 plants I think. Have to ask OH when he gets back. Off to see Nick Cave this evening so no JA tonight thank you very much.

Well done Mr PJ Curiosity got the better of me and I've been firtling with the big fork ;D One plant - more than happy with the results - a couple of pounds in weight I reckon, biggest one about 7" long, 2" wide with side sprouts x Tig

I think ours were smaller than that Tig. Thought they were Anya nobbly spuds when I saw them on the kitchen table.
So congratulations to you Tig. I fancy cooking that recipe with beetroot so I may dig up another plant tomorrow.

I haven't touched mine yet - but the foliage has all died back and gone brown now - should I, shouldn't I?? Ah overlooked that one I dug up one at MssK today, it is huuuuuuge. I need to clean it all as I am going to give it to friends. 5 Of them and there is still enough to give me a meal as well and I did not dig all up. Over 6 heafty meals from just one plant I fear I will get an ivestation of JA next year if I don't broggle the soil from top to toe.

The funny thing is my red peel JA's taste sweet but the white one I ate raw tastes of... nothing really. As if it is just something to bulk the salad with without it interfering with a) taste and b) calories as it has zero of those.
Has any one noticed a difference in taste between white skin and red skin JA ?

My white ones are sweet when cooked (sliced and fried in a little butter and oil with garlic), not tried them raw Dutchy

I cooked another meal of JAs with beetroot again but this time I undercooked them a little and I must say they tasted ghastly. They were white ones. Here is a photo of the crop we got from 3 plants from B & Q (1.7 kilos) Made sure we dug deep and there were no stray veg or roots. They have been washed by OH especially for the pic.

We had some white ones peeled and roasted yesterday - they were sweet! My digestive system cannot cope with more than a few at a time though Shall you be growing some more Mr PJ?

I will try a red peel one in todays salad. See if that too tastes of nothing when eaten raw. At least we then know that you have to cook them for best taste.

Red peel equally uninteresting as white peel. I suppose we should cook them to get that lovely sweet taste. Cooking most likely dissolves the starch. And before I forget my harvest from just one plant. help

Aren't they pretty? We have them popping up in the garden at work where we grew them last year and another patch next to a long row of lemon yellow sunflowers - a really nice combination - lovely and cheering. They will grow from any tiny bit left in the soil but they're so pretty who cares?

I dig all up. If I leave one tuber in, the plants will be all over. Then I select 5 and replant. Those are huge at the moment. ;D

We had a glut of JA last season and I can't eat them, so OH overdoses on the damn things. He was giving them away by the kilo in the end. By the way I would give him maybe 5 max as you are the one suffering his overdose ;D ;D ;D Did you know they make a good wind brake as they are rather tough. So you can use them to your avail as well

Mine reached a similar hight and despite a real bad storm they bend over but did not fall to pieces and all behind it was fine because they took the brunt of it.
