Can someone offer me some help?
I have 'rescued' from one of the plant arrangements at work an Orchid - I think it's a Phaleanopsis. We have a company who come in, place pretty awful arrangements around the place, leave them without water for a few weeks and then come back and restock them. Lately, we've had arrangements with Orchids and then to my horror I found out that they chuck all the plants out when they restock:o, hence I have my rescue plan in place!!
Now the poor specimen I have has been by the front entrance, in a draught. It's in a clear plastic pot and I can see the roots in the pot which look pretty healthy, there seem to be some roots on the top of the pot which don't look healthy - more grey and dried up.......what should I do? Also, some of the flowers (now removed) had failed to open and were shrivelled as the stalk was turning yellow. The leaves look OK!!
Any tips or am I wasting my time?

Most orchids are pretty specialised in their requirements and getting them to flower for a second year can be a nightmare. But, the moth orchid or phaleanopsis is one of the easier to keep. Here's a link to the experts www.mcbeansorchids.co.uk/cultivation.htmGood luck GH

Cheers for that mate - I'm determined to keep this poor specimen alive, especillay as I saw one in M&S today for £14.99 and it only had 1 flower stem - mine has 2!!

Hello GH, When the flowers have finished on my Phaleanopsis I don't cut the old flower stem off - just cut it back to the bud below where the last flower was. It should send out another shoot I am really glad you saved it - they are easy to look after

Thanks for that Pam, I'm going to be inspecting it for flower buds! . It does look much better since I have given it a drop of water (with rain water - thanks to the info from Andy, that website is excellent ) And I'm determined to keep it alive - AND rescue more, if I get the knack of keeping them right!!

Hello GH, If you haven't got any clean rain water cooled boiled water will do. I mist the leaves and around the base of the plant and about every 2 weeks run water through the compost and let it drain well.Don't overwater Just realised I am telling you all this but I haven't checked andy's info - hope I am not saying the wrong things

Mcbeans Orcjids is about 3 miles away from my house. I was given a guided tour of their nursery last year and it was well worth it !!!

RF
Your Orchids are beautiful ;D
The rescued one from work still has 3 flowers on it, but no sign of any future buds at the moment. I have got my eye on another one at work which is an unusual greenish colour - fingers crossed that I can make a rescue attempt before the plant lady comes and chucks it out!!

Thank you Isabella and GH - I do hope that you can grab the one at work GH - I have had Orchids for over 20 years now and have also had most of the different varieties at some time or another and I still keep coming back to the Phaleanopsis Orchids.
I think basically because they are to simple to keep and the dark pink one flowered for over a year which was marvellous.

This is for Chuckles in particular. Are you near a Lidl store? I have now bought 7 or 8 of their orchids, including the ones in your photograph, the smaller flowered one at the back now has its fifth spike this year. They are always sold at 4.99 If you register at their website, they will let you know when they are on offer. Luckily, I am very near one of their branches, so I am up there by nine o'clock on the day. Will post my photos now.

Erm, when my moth orchid was finished flowering, I cut the flower stem right down It still has green leaves, and has started to throw up a new set of leaves from a different area of the pot. Will it ever flower again?

Moth Orchids - Phalaenopsis flower again very easily if you don't cut right down to the bottom. The higher an "eye" you have, the quicker they flower again.
Yours will flower but it may take a little time.

Someone who has bloomed *all* summer : Ephidendrum capricornu. A native of Peru. Absolutely marveluously striking cooler growing Epiphendrum, upright canes up to 14" to 24" with rank-and-file 3" deep green leaves with purple undersides, large branched pannicles of blooms. One inch flowers whose sepals' backs are hot pink with orange sherbet insides, the pink petals are thread-like, the pink multi-lobed lip is fused to the column thrusting foreward, the apical lobe divided into a pair of legs, the array of flowers resembling an ensemble of dancers. Wooo Hoooo! It is free flowering throughout the year and grows best in shade to bright light, (1500-2500 Footcandles). Indirect light and pronounced shadowing. Their temperature requirements are best at intermediate to cool ( 52°F min. to 80°F max.) It is potted in soil and kept evenly moist but not soggy. Outside in the summer he gets 2-3 waterings per week. Inside will vary but gets dry slightly between waterings. (When time permits I'd like to post who is blooming and their particulars as I did above. LOTS are blooming but I need the time to post. Oooo! I got three huge bags of potting medium for the orchids late today. Woooo Hoooo! )

Lovely C3D - I love orchids and they are not the difficult plants that many believe them to be. Must admit that I would love a few in the garden but that really is a dream.
Looking forward to seeing the next one.

Hi. This weekend hopefully we will start bringing in all the house plants that have spent their time outside since late spring. So many need to be re-potted and it's just easier to deal with the potential mess outside rather than in the living room! We have no greenhouse so everyone comes inside and are scattered about the living room and near the front door. There's at least 200-250+ ? plants. About 75-100 are orchids.

Sounds like rather a lot of work to me C3D. However I am rather envious of so many Orchids.

Takes *forever* to upload a photograph to Photobucket for me. I have very similar problems with them as I do with this site! No one likes me. So here's another planty thing. One of the Phals that have been blooming here for some time. He should continue to bloom for many months. Phalaenopsis. Squirrel stole the ID tag. LOL! ==========================
