I have a very old plant, (25 yrs or so) its had lots of babies but now the bottom of the plant has gone pale and wrinkly and its top-heavy so keeps pulling the pot over, the upper part of the plant, by contrast is still healthy looking and vividly marked. Can I rescue the old dear or has she had her chips?

Sweetleaf, you dropped the hint, so here I am! Mick. ;D Hi Mick, Welcome to Garden World! ;D Pleased to see that sweetleaf has tempted you over. As sweetleaf has mentioned on the BBC we don't currently have a cacti expert, so we'd welcome your input, if only on an occasional basis.

Spruance, it would be my pleasure although there are plenty who are more expert than me! But then I suppose you could say that about almost anything!!
And I hope that it is more than occasional. It's a very big subject.

Spruance, I didn't read it as such so didn't feel at all belittled. I know that cacti/succulents aren't everybody's cup of tea so I don't expect an avalanche of questions.
But it would be nice if there was.

There are 2 that might not like unheated - the 3 stemmed blue cactus and the prickly white cactus. I can name most of them if you want (tomorrow - off home now).

O.K., here we go from top to bottom:- Opuntia microdasys v. rufida (mind your fingers on this one) Next is the general view - hard to see what is what there. Aloe variegata in the centre Oreocereus sps. Espostoa sps. Oreocereus again. Echinocactus grusonii - white spined species. There is also yellow spined and one variety with no spines at all. Pilosocereus sps. Notocactus leninghausii The fuzzy ones are difficult to identify. The one with a flower is a Rebutia. I think the last one is a cristate Cereus species.
Remember I'm new here. Who's the evil one??

The EVIL ONE is of course the Opuntia! It fires its spines at you if it is knocked and they are small enough to miss,.... until youve moved them to your face lips etc!

Of course! (I thought it might have been your OH!).
I don't have too many Opuntias but they all have this habit to a greater or lesses extent.

Of course! (I thought it might have been your OH!). I don't have too many Opuntias but they all have this habit to a greater or lesses extent. I only have one, OH refers to it as the "lollipop", but I dont think I fancy licking it lol

I have usually got the Opuntia at the back of the table, but cleaning up, I always seem to come across a few stray spines, Im sure it doesnt like me, but maybe they dont like anybody, lol To recap, just bring in the blue multistemmed and the white prickly varieties and leave the rest to the big chill?...and no more watering till spring, right, off to make room on the windowsills, see you later, and thanks again!

Do you know, I havent a clue about his name, my attention was caught straight away by the 6ft cactus in the first shot, he was very knowledgeable though. Your offer is very sweet, thank you, I may take you up on that, as long as you let me pay the postage.

I have a 6' blue cactus that you're very welcome to! But I can't put it in the post.
If anybody else wants it they can have it for free as long as they collect!
Next spring I will have a lot of spare seedlings which would be fine in an unheated greenhouse as long as they are kept very dry in winter. They are called Echinocereus - all have magnificent flowers and are relatively easy to grow.

I just googled Echinocereus and came up with "strawberry hedgehog cactus" do yours fruit? I must admit that strawberry flavoured edible fruits was a bit of a surprise! And I thought my baby Rebutia was pretty...just goes to show how wonderfully diverse nature is.
