Look what I found this afternoon hiding in some rotten bits of wood I was taking to the bonfire, , think it's a hornet it was about 3.5cm in length.

I accidentally dropped a piece of wood on it, what a shame. I thought it was dead when I first saw it, but after getting it out of the hole it had made I could see it was alive

Just been checking it out and it says.......They can be up to 3.5cm long and are chestnut brown and yellow. Also newly-mated queens hibernate during the winter, at least she died happy ;D ;D

I've heard about these hornets.....we don't seem to be plagued by them up North....thankful for something at least as they sound dreadful.

I found one once in one of OH's T shirts. Must have been in it when I fetched it off the clothes line, I'd folded it up and was putting it a way a few day later and felt a lump. It was dead but had chewed a hole trying to get out

Yikes. Do they behave just like wasps or are they aggressive? Wasps are not aggressive by nature only when you corner them. ;D I just thought of your OH face when he was to find out about it. There is a hole in my Teeshirt, my Teeshirt, my Teeshirt etc.etc. Dutchy p.s. will be double checking my firewood now although I have never seen any around here.
