Day before yesterday (a day when the rain stopped for a few hours and the weird orange ball of fire appeared briefly in the sky) I spotted this drying itself off ... It's an Orange Tip Butterfly, not that you'd know from this angle x Tig Well done ~Tig it's a great shot. Is that a ladybird I see as well? i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif

It's been a very sparse year for butterflies, not even that many cabbage whites about. Just starting to see a few peacocks although they are very skitty x Tig

I agree Tig it's a great last summer shop. I've had tons of cabbage whites laying eggs all over the nasturtium but no peacocks.

I saw a red admiral up on the moors on sunday, great shot Tig. I have seen a couple of dragonflies so far but not close enough for any pics yet.

Thanks for the noms I've not seen a red admiral yet, nor have I seen a comma or a painted lady, we have had them all in previous years Spotted several peacocks and small tortoiseshells, and earlier in the year there were gatekeepers and common blues about. x Tig

This landed on the window of my shed. Pretty sure its a butterfly, the body is too slim for a moth, but I've no idea what kind. Any thoughts?

Are we posting butterfly pics in this thread? Or 'Insects (other than bees)? Anyway, the butterflies have started appearing for the season; a bit later this year than usual, it seems to me. Here is one of the early arrivals. No monarchs yet.

Ah! The butterfly thread. Very clever Dr. Watson. I think it is a swallowtail, RF, but I don't know which particular kind. Not one of the more common visitors to the garden, but I see them around from time to time. They always seem to be on the move though, always fluttering around; not easy to catch on camera. I got lucky with this one. It must have been hungry and stayed on the mock orange for quite a few minutes. Thanks for the nom.

Gorgeous Butterfly torontotrini and how considerate of it to land on a colour co-ordinated flower to have it's picture taken

It's beautiful torontotrini well deserved of the nomination. I found this little one resting the other day. It's a moth of course but I think it's fine to post here.

I spotted this unusual 'moth' today. Not sure what it is, it was the mustard colour flitting by that caught my eye, and it landed in the most awkward place to try and get a piccie

We've had oodles of butterflies in the garden this last week - wonderful, only they won't sit still to have their photos taken. There were four Peacocks on the Inulas which seem to be very popular. I managed to get a shot of one!
