I too find these places an irritation. One of the larger garden centres near us has just become even larger - by enlarging the gift and garbage section!
My concern is that the gardening gets neglected because of all these other distractions. Plants are not properly looked after, stock is run down and so on
I would be happier if the gifts etc could remain a quite separate concern but then that is probably not good business

We have a few of these giant GCs in Leicester. One has a LOT of 'pap' but the plants are in excellent shape, well looked after and reasonably priced. Another local GC has more scented candles, lace pillows and ornaments than you could shake a stick at...the plants are only ever OK when they first go on display. then they seem to be left to fend for themselves, the staff don't know anything about them and the prices are prohibitive.
As I've already said, some people enjoy going to these massive GCs that sell more fripperies than gardening stuff....that's fine by me...as long as we have a few good 'uns as well. (with PLANTS in)
