I want to invest in a pair of Felcos, but there are so many different ones that I don't know which model to buy: I have small hands so don't want something that opens up too wide.
What Felcos do you have and how would you rate them?

Hi Plocket
Can't recommend Felco's highly enough, I wouldn't be without mine!!
I have a Felco 4, they don't open too wide and they are the perfect fit for my hand. Plus you can take them apart for maintenance and cleaning.
Hope that helps, but I'd suggest going to your local stockist of Felco's and handling them to see which one is right for you - that's what I did and then got the OH to buy them as a Birthday Pressie!!

Have you seen the electric secateurs? I thought it was a joke but with the £2,000+ price tag I think it must be for real!

I've got 4's & inherited 5's both are well used & in need of oiling.. must do that today, I also have 11 pairs of others, discarded at various times by various family members, I'm thinking of starting a collection, but it does show Felco's are worth the money, don't know about electric ones though, I might not be able to keep up with them even if I could afford them!

5" secateurs are girly secateurs, but I've got small hands for a bloke, so I tell everyone I've got 8" secateurs.
Well, that's my story anyhow.

I have a pair of 7's, as mentioned elsewhere. I have had them years. I used to go through a pair of cheap ones each year, won't say which brand, so these have been one h**l of an improvement. After every use, they are cleaned and oiled and put away. I have just given them their first sharpen with the Felco oil stone, so that shows how good they are! I presume the electric ones are for people who don't have the strength in their hands anymore? If not, they seem pointless! Unless you are a show off!!

I've bought 3 pairs of Felco's in the last 3 years all of which have gone missing . I now buy a cheap pair at the beginning of every season and if they go missing, I get my boss to buy me another pair ;D

Oh dear Susie, but at least your boss will buy you cheapies.
I do have a pair of those pink flower cutting snippers that I like but they are quite lightweight. OH bought me a pair of Vintage secateurs from Wyevale when he broke my grandma's ancient felcos, and I have a very cheap pair of supermarket secs - both are ok but nothing to rave about.
Actually I insisted on M&D getting felcos earlier this year because I often do pruning and tidying for them and their old pairs of secs were so ghastly I refused to use them. They asked what I would like them to buy (for use at their house) and I said Felcos. Off they went, decided on a pair they liked and they are so pleased with them they've offered to get me some for my birthday. HURRAH!!!!!

Ah and once more a new world has opened up. Electric secateurs. I can't see myself going through the garden with a long string like bit of electric wire trailing behind though. Plocket clever girl so that is how you get your garden equipment. Hope your birth day is soon so the late autumn pruning can be done with the new tool. I clean my tools with sunflower oil that is left over from baking oliebollen ( dutch sweet stuff only eaten around the 31 of December). Can't use it for anything else so I make the best of it. It hasn't done my tools any harm. ( going cheap I know lopsided Dutch grin smiley) Dutchy

It's not far off Dutchy!!! Sunflower oil sounds nice and cheap! I have also got sewing-machine oil and wondered if that would be suitable - I don't want to wreck my new felcos though!!

Sorry, but your Felcos weren't cheap, so why worry about cost! I have had the same can of 3 in 1 oil for ages. If I do run out, like someone else said, WD40 can be used. Everyone should have a can of this, no matter what they do. I remember, when I first suffered from my stress and my Mum came round to check on me, so that my wife could go to work, that I told her about it as one of the doors in our house started to squeak a little. She, or should I say my Dad, usually used the oil, but as I went to sleep, she went mad with the WD40, and sprayed every door (not just the one that squeaked) in our house. They were all so good that we had to find our doorstop thingys so that they would stay open sometimes!!! She is now a convert. I think I have about 3 cans here, but keep losing the red straws for them! After every use, just give the Felcos a wipe with a damp cloth to get rid of any plant material, dry and then wipe with a cloth that has some oil over it. Every now and again drip some into the mechanism and everything should be OK. I know most people should know this, but thought I would add it anyway! My Dad brought me up to look after things, so they would look after me. I have had it for 42 years now, so it is second nature to me now! Keith

It's just that though that 1in3 oil is probably best, other oils can be effective too. As long as you do use it. Otherwise the surprise in Spring will come in a lovely brown colour. Dutchy p.s. I just like to recycle. Hence the sunflower oil. ;D
