I saw it on tv, and they said they were still building the collection, perhaps the display will improve with time, Mick

But there's nowhere else for them to go - not at ground level anyway. However, let's not be negative! I shall report back on Tuesday!

I think we're looking at it from different points of view Mick. I must say it did cross my mind that there was a relatively small planting area, but can't really comment about how good/bad it is for growing alpines. I just think that architecturally it is a fantastic building.

Mick I don't think you need to worry about not being popular. It's nice to have different opinions on the boards - it makes the discussions more interesting! I can see your point about there not being a large area for plants, but let's face it alpines aren't exactly huge! And the arguement for the design of the building is that it's supposed to control the "climate" more, within the glass. And of course the alpines aren't restricted to inside the building - there are loads outside that can cope with our weather. The alpine area will always be small because they are such dinky little plants mostly, but I do take your point that there perhaps isn't space for more, should they be discovered and added to the collection. I would be interested to know whether our more positive attitude changes the way you look at the Alpine House when you visit at the weekend Mick. And I don't mean that you should change your opinion!!! Have a great visit - I'm positively green with envy!

Why don't we organise a garden world visit to Kew....maybe time it for the orchid festival in February (if it still happens). That'll give everyone time to plan for it Who's up for it ?

Hum. I'm afraid I wouldn't be a contender. My life is pretty hectic at the moment and OH is very negative about meeting up with internet users. No offence to any of you!

Hi y'all.
Well, I went to Kew on Monday with my daughter and the 2 boys aged 7 and 5 and had an excellent day.
Obviously, the summer show is over but most trees, with the exception of a few Acers are still in green leaf. We started at Climbers and Creepers for the boys which is the childrens interactive play area, then into the excellent apple display at White Peaks. Next the Princess of Wales Conservatory. There is always lots to see in there with a display about cranberries. The main pool in there had been cleared out and it was easy to see the enormous catfish that lives in there.
Next to the Alpine House! Sorry, haven't changed my mind - a huge building with little display space but the plants in there were absolutely exquisite. On from there towards the Palm House via the brilliant display of gourds and pumpkins which the boys loved. Lunch in the Palm House which has an updated acquarium area in the basement. On the lake outside the Palm House was a huge display of Cranberries which is apparently how they grow them in New England.
From there to the Temperate House and Evolution House with the latter needing an upgrading - this is the boys favourite house but is not as good as it used to be. En route there we came across a very unusual tree - Maclura Pomifera- which has fruits that resemble bright green tennis ball sized brains! The boys loved them and took some back to show school. Also of note there was the Indian Bean Tree which had a fantastic show of fruit.
By now the little one's legs were getting tired so we made our way back to the car via the Holly Walk and home. Still lots more to see and I will be back there again before Xmas to buy a few presents.
