With all the gardening shows on the tele at the moment, which TV gardener do you really rate.
For me, it's got to be Alan Titchmarsh. His enthusiasm is boundless and he presents his shows with humour and knowledge.
About 10 years ago, there was a TV program which had a gardener on called Paul Sturgess who i used to work with. I also spent 3 years working with that "jack the lad" Chris Collins.....we were both trainees with Brighton parks dept.

Rachel De Thame floats my boat ! I think she's very knowlegeable, along with being very easy on the eye ! I actually think Monty's alright but I really don't like Joe Swift. He's probably a really nice guy but I find him monotone and dull ! Chris Beardshaw is too dumpy, very unphotogenic, ginger and a bit on the tubby side of lardy FA x

Hi Andy - I agree with you - a few years ago, when I "discovered" gardening, I watched How to be a Gardener - bought the books and videos and have read/played over and over. his enthusiasm is definately infectious - in those days my OH recorded every gardening program on TV and I watched them when I came home from work but now I prefer to garden or read, rather than watch TV. Can't remember the names of all the people I watched, but AT was def my inspiration. I also have some Geoff Hamilton books and have seen a few of his repeats on TV but think I would have loved him, if I had been into gardening then. Regards - PA

I think it depends on who was on the TV when we all started to get interested in gardening. For me it was Geoff Hamilton and he has had a seriously big influence on how and why I garden. I usually try to make things myself out of recycled stuff, I always garden with wildlife in mind and I try to be as eco friendly as I can. I still think GH's designs for his various gardens are hard to beat even after all these years. He was definitely an inspiration for me and even now when I try something new I always run it past GH's standards in my head. His ideas and work has shaped all TV gardening ever since. I wonder what he would have made of some of the more extreme ideas _ I bet he'd have enjoyed quite a few of them actually (and had a go at making some of the sculptures etc)!

For me it's a joint first Geoff Hamleton and Alan Titchmarsh. Both had/have a very special, natural, easy going way about them and ther approach to gardening, Geoff was very passionate about every aspect of gardening and Alan has a passion too with a splash of humour thrown in.

Geoff Hamilton Alan Titchmarsh and Bob Flowerdew... all heroes of mine, but my dad started me off with veg and my mum with flowers so their influence came late, when I was already deeply addicted!

Alan Titchmarsh was my mentor when I first took up gardening seriously and I still use some of the techniques I learnt from him, the rest have been adapted or picked up elsewhere but he is definitly the one I started with. If I had to feed the inhabitants of a desert island and needed to takes somebody who could do a planting scheme as well though, it would definitly be Rachel du Thame ;D First veggie gardening book was the Geoff Hamilton one and it goes to the plot with me while the HDRA one stays at home (it's new) and the Veg Expert has been lost PS calling Andy a football fan is a contravention of the Trades Description Act ;D And one final edit - Tis Syd everytime ;D

Oops - am I finally being modded !!!! But, I like him ( and anyone that likes DG) so if he is not a football fan, that is OK by me !!! Just his av is a bit misleading !!!! Or is it some in joke re his team not being good - am a self confessed footie thickie but live with a boring "expert " but, too proud to ask him!!!! Take care - PA

I have to admit that I really can't choose between Geoff Hamilton and Alan T. They both manage to pass on enthusiasm and knowledge without being patronising, and while AT is a yorkshireman , and therefore very keen on saving the pennies, I think most of my best money saving tips came from Geoff. It was Geoff who told me about collecting seeds, getting 'free' carnations from bought bunches, making cloches from plastic and bits of hose pipe etc.. I still get thrilled when I see an old GW on sky with Geoff on it.

Tis a slight aside at his choice of football team from a true football fan ;D I presume your particular hole is in Lincolnshire. I have only become keen on gardening recently, but I did watch TV gardening programmes in my younger days and enjoyed Geoffrey Smith's programmes. By no stretch of the imagination could he have been called organic. I seem to remember he sloshed chemicals about all over the place. I particularly remember him fumigating a greenhouse once - I think the ozone layer must have been reduced by 20% on that day

Doesn't anyone remember Percy Thrower then ;D When I was a youngster he used to visit the Blue Peter garden...sigh...but in those days I was more interested in Bleep and Booster. Geoff Hamilton was wonderful, but sadly he's no longer with us. Now, if you twisted my arm and insisted I chose a favourite, I suppose it would have to be Carol...but to be honest I like them all...mostly. Mr Gavin I can appreciate as a Modern Landscape artist, although not (so far) to my taste.

Does anyone remember Gardening Today from Kings Heath Park with Bob Price and Cyril Fletcher?? They were very entertaining.
My favourite has to be Mr T. I like Carol Klein too and was a big fan of Geoff Hamilton.

The best gardener ever seen on tv has got to be Geoff Hamilton. His knowledge was beyond compare and the fact that he spoke to his audience in a way that even the most novice gardener could understand, was wonderful. I have videos of all his programmes and most of his books, but what would please me most would be to see his programmes re-run on television, so that new gardeners could see what an inspiration he was. I loved him to bits!

I liked Geoff Hamilton.....also like Alan Titchmarshes cheeky presenting style. He does make me chuckle. Not fussed on Carol Klein or Charlie Dimmock. I did like the Beechgrove garden's Jim and Walter....like watching the Laurel and Hardy of gardening.
