I don't think rats are responsible for ALL my gardening failures.....just most of them Mind you, I suppose it could have been sabotage...hmmm.. Ziggy, I accidentally grew the best caulis ever 2 years ago. I was late with my greens so I bought some plants from the market and just shoved them in, and forgot to label them . Early Spring I noticed some of them had lovely cauli heads forming so I ate them quick before the greeblies got them. Never managed it since though...

Verbena Bonariensis from seed for me too, only ended up with 5 seedlings - but now my garden is covered with them! I have never had any success at growing lobelia from seed either I planted some Agapanthus bulbs 3 years ago, which were a total failure.

Did you grow the agapanthus in a pot or in the ground Rita? I find them much more successful in containers as the soil drains better and they get squished up which they like!

Chocolate Cosmos so far is the only casualty. Nothing else I've grown will actually die! I can't kill them off myself so I was hoping for the frost that it claims on the destructions will kill them off but that hasn't arrived either When I was younger I grew a load of pansies, calendula and himalyan poppies which all came up (calendulas came up 3 inches tall within days!). The pansies and the poppies all got baked one particularly hot day. Calendulas got planted out and are still going strong about 10 years on. Ooh and some carnations I grew were only taken out a few years ago because the garden was being done. I must have the magic touch! lol

The slugs got my Blue Poppy, anything I can manage to grow despite the teeming hordes of slugs in my garden is a success for me. I've just bought a selection of alpines from B&Q, six lovely plants for £5 and a bargain tray of saxifrage for £1.49. And two of the alpines are sedums. Bet the slugs have gone to get their cutlery already, but I'm throwing down the gauntlet this time.....
