Evening folks
Bit of a tough one but I was essentially right - the job that I do will no longer be done in my local Tax Office (nor will anything else because it's likely to close, by March 2008 at the latest).
The work that I do will be moved to 2 "urban regions", being Peterborough (70 miles away) or Southend (50 miles away). There are are also further sites at Cambridge (50 miles), Norwich (65 miles) or Ipswich (25 miles (or possibly 40 if we're moved to Felixstowe which is still classed as "Ipswich")) where there will be "some" local compliance work being undertaken. At this stage there is no definite date for our office to shut nor is there any guarantee that we can get moved to Ipswich. There is also no guarantee as to what work we'll be doing if & when we get moved.
They announced some time ago that 12500 staff have to go by March 2008 and they announced this morning that a further unknown number of staff (but probably 12500 again) will have to go by March 2011.
There are no compulsory redundancies until September 2007 at the earliest so I know I'll still be there until then. Hopefully there will be something more "concrete" in the not too distant future so that I can start planning things like childcare and travel arrangements etc.
Thanks again for all your support - you're a lovely bunch of people !

Hi Andy It's not good news but at least you know a bit more as to how you stand now. I saw the news on Google earlier on and was thinking about you. How does Gordon Brown expect to get his taxation in if there is no one out 'on the beat'? I hope you manage to get sorted out without having to make a long haul round trip.

Bloody hell! So they've told you all that and basically left you not knowing what's happening??? Sorry to be so blunt and forthright when you are probably relieved that you don't need to worry at the moment: I'm absolutely delighted that you haven't been given your marching orders - HUG.
So what will you do now? You don't have to answer that straight away Andy but it might be an opportunity to re-think your career prospects and perhaps look for something new.
What a day for you! I'm so glad that it wasn't as bad as we all expected. Have a lovely evening and a large drink!!!!!

Yep Plocket - that's about the strength of it. They've told us that our jobs will move but not where to or when. At least they are offering to pay our travel costs for the first 3 years after we move, but only up to the cost of a bus fare !
It's not satisfactory but it's what we got. No-one knows where they'll be or what they'll be doing this time next year. Great huh - really gives me the motivation and incentive to get out of bed on Monday morning. At least I've got a day off tomorrow - babysitting all day.

Well Cherub has 2½ hours at nursery in the morning so hopefully demon boy will be good (and possibly have a sleep) while she's there !!
I don't mind anyway. After the day I've had today, I can deal with pretty much any cr*p that comes my way tomorrow !

Evening FA
Sorry I just had to laugh at the expression 'Urban Region' - what a load of b******s
At least you know abit more where you stand now, but perhaps it's time to think about moving on to a new career which doesn't involve too much traveling (or if it does, at least to a nice Urban Region ;D)

So a year to decide/plan what you want to do? Hang in there for any redundancy pay though! LL x

Well, it's a year before any compulsory redundancies but we've been told that if we want to give ourselves the best chance of staying on, we should move sooner rather than later. To be perfectly honest, I wish they'd sat us down and said "you're going there, as of this date, and this is the work you'll do when you get there. Take it or leave it". At least we'd have been able to decide if we wanted to stay and to make plans. As it is, all of the uncertainty over our futures is the same today as it was yesterday.
Personally, I'm inclined to look elsewhere for employment but at this stage, I'm going to wait and see what I can get financially to do them a favour and **** off !!!

Take them for all you can........they have been doing that to you for years!! I suppose that if nothing is happening immediately it does give you chance to look around and think about what you want. Enjoy a relaxing drink......... you've earned it today.

Not too bad really...is it? Dunno! Being a major cog in a miniscule veggie growing machine - I don't have these worries.....maybe you should really have a serious think about what you really want to do now FA. At least you don't sound tooo stressed about it all (I hope). And I agree with all the above! XX

No point stressing about it Myrt. Gonna just be relaxed as much as poss and get on with living my life.
I really do think it'll be ok if I stay because I'm very hopeful that we can get into Ipswich - we're only a small team of 4 Inspectors in Sudbury so they should able to accommodate us in some dusty corner somewhere but it's also a good opportunity to look around, see what's out there and maybe get out now with a bit of dosh to pay for my conservatory ! I've been unsettled for a while now so I really AM going to make an effort to see what other career paths might be open to me.

Andy, I know you said before that you wouldn't consider switching sides and becoming a tax advisor, but if there is going to be a dearth of local tax offices, then tax specialists might be in demand. Something to think about maybe.

Spruance
Not sure I could make the switch - I'm too entrenched on my side to consider "sleeping with the enemy" ;D
To be fair, I probably could cross over but there are so few jobs in that profession in this area, it will mean travelling just as far as if I stay in HMRC. And if I switched, I wouldn't get flexi time, a non-contributory pension scheme and 6 weeks holiday a year !!!
I think if I was to go "outside" it would probably be to something completely different, although I would probably supplement my income by doing a bit of "tax advisoring" part time.
Cheers FA
