hurrah! lovely white blossom finally on wild plums in the hedges... can it be? can Old Moley shrug out of his sewn-up undies and goosegrease proofing to emerge, like a fabulous, bejewelled, freshly minted... well, minted Jewelly thing into... Spring?
Any encouraging signs round your way yet?
OM.

Oh, Moley, lets hope so! Perhaps if we all believe it enough, start wearing shorts and t-shirts etc, we can make it happen! Come on everyone! Deny winter! Spring is here!

What a lovely idea - well her in Germany - crocuses etc. At the Nursery today we were told that the winter is over but we will still get minus 10 or so - no please no......
My clematis are showing so much new growth, roses as well, buddleia - mmmh well they are alive...........but what has amazed me is the trees.
Not only sycamore, birch, beech and co but lilac's and magnolias etc.
Amazing really for February.

Winter has gone, out with a flourish of snow a week or so ago. Now Spring has it's thrall over the countryside and time marches onwards towards a mild end to Feb, an above average mild March, and hopefully a good long hot summer. ;D Lots of Crocus and Daffs are open in my garden and the trees all have big fat buds on them

OK Andy - explain please - do we get frost and we go backwards or how do you mean it as a gardener?
Must admit you have me interested....

Spring will sprung around the end of april as per usual I think it will have sprung well before that, as I said in my earlier post, winter has finished with us, the mild theme will continue as far as we can see meteorogically and that will advance Spring. Anyway, aren't the Spring months March, April and May? Summer June, July & August, Autumn is September, October, November and Winter is December, January and February. Temps are so far above normal for February that it is more like the end of March at the moment.

In my humble opinion....the seasons have moved forward a month.....winter is Jan Feb and mar. Spring is April, may and June, summer is july, Aug and sept and autumn is Oct, Nov and Dec.
I mean that things usually catch up in nature. Things may be a week or two either way but things do catch up.
We all....including myself, have a habbit of presuming prring is here just becasue we have a few nice days. But cold weather, including frosts and even snow are possible in June.

Hmmm, I'm with Andy here - I know we've had a fairly mild Winter overall but it's still February...the weather has a nasty habit of chucking some pretty fierce stuff in at the last moment. I have lots of buds on plants coming through and I'm sowing seeds but I'm still not starting anything outside. The PT & GH will start to fill up but I'm keeping the fleece to hand!

Yup, spring has definitely sprung here. Lots of daffs and crocuses, one lot of tulips already flowering, rosemary covered with flowers, buds on the lilac and blackcurrent, my commelina is not only sending out new leaves but has apparently had babies ;D ... unfortunately, as Barbara says, the slugs have also woken up ... cheers ...

I think that we're being lulled into a false sense of security...remember last year? I go with the quality and length of light that we get, as the days lengthen and the sun gets brighter I start to relax a bit.
Altho it's been mild so far there's still time for a freeze....bbbrrrrrrr. We've still got the winter quilt on our bed too...altho it's quite mild during the day it's still been flipping freezing at night ;D

My garden thinks it's spring....the buds are breaking and i noticed the birds nesting again. They are chittering at night too which is a sure sign they are busy.
We're still getting early morning frosts but not hard frosts like we should be getting.
The weeds are starting to grow....and already mentioned my grass and my apple tress are the only thing that isn't growing.
OH agrees with Andy - he feels that the season's are moving by a month.
If that's winter just about done....i must have blinked and missed it. ;D

My garden is full of spring-like signs. The snowdrops are nearly over - been in flower about 4 weeks. Daffs in bud or open, crocus' blooming and various shrubs showing signs of buds and leaves.
In my small pond I've got an amount of frogspawn which would cover a piece of A4 paper - that could be a lot of tadpoles - but then I've got a lot of slugs. They've been pretty active over the last couple of weeks as well.
I'm conscience that it is only February and we could still get some nasty weather surprises.

... this morning I saw that the only one of the lupins which I sowed last year to survive the slugs - which I thought had then been killed by winter - is poking tightly curled up leaves through the ground. So not only is spring sprung, but I'm not as much of a crap gardener as I thought (I'm sure I'll revise that view tomorrow, but for now it's nice to have a bit of self-affirmation) ... cheers ...

I still think we have a few frosts left yet, maybe even some snow. It is just the plants don't know it yet!! My Dad, all through his gardening (job) life, kept a log and it would make interesting reading. I must ask him if he still keeps it, now he is retired. Keith

Not sure about spring being sprung but its certainly on its way. My early flowering daffs are out but the normal March ones are on only at half their full height so far ! Some Anemones flowering and the witchazel just starting to go over. The problem at the moment is that the garden is just soooooo wet. The lawn (should i say grass patches with mud) is squelchy with water actually rising in some area. At least the drought seems to be put at bay for the moment. I just want it to warm up so it will have a chance to dry but ive got a feeling this isnt going to be before April. Mr G

Talking of snow, I remember the last Saturday in April 1981 we were snowed in It was the week before I got married. I'm pleased to say the following week we had sunshine ;D

It's good to see such hardy folk out and about though isn't it? Wonder if they were cold last night.........still, it's definitely Spring as I've just spent an hour battling with my settee covers, taking one lot off (disgusting...biscuit crumbs galore, but no money under there) and putting my spare ones back on. I feel like I've stretched every muscle I got - it's a tough job for a short granny with, you know. They're on now and do I wish I'd run an iron over them first.......I think I deserve a toasted teacake and orange juice now.

The Amelanchier Lamarckii buds have stretched and are now showing flower buds.
Which means we will soon have a cold spell with sleet and rain. The shrub/tree knows it looks best against a dark background. After that, yes, Spring will be fully grown.

Well, my foxtail lily - which I thought I'd killed by siting it in a boggy shady spot - has poked through. Yesterday - nothing. Today - three happy shoots. So spring is springing in Dublin ;D
