I can guess why developers might plant certain trees, because they are cheaper. My SIL works for a landscape firm, responsible for turfing and planting up new developments. They are planting small ornamental cherries, but at the entrance to each plot, not actually in the garden. More firms need to think like this, with some foresight as to how big trees and shrubs will become, and how much maintenance will be required. Though, I don't see why they have to plant anything. Wonder if they have to do that sort of thing now, to pass planning?

We have a row of trees planted in a very narrow boarder along the pavement on the main road. Obviously small when planted but now they are so big the pavements are all lifting up with the roots. Whoever plants trees like this as no forsight whatsoever.
