They love acorns barbara...i have a large colony of Jays at work and at times, the garden sounds like the Amazon rain forest with all their screeches. Lovely birds though.

We have a jay around here - I can tell from his flight behaviour - he occasionally visits but doesn't stay around. Wish he would

We have a family of jays in the garden next door, they have nested there for at least 5years.
Do jays not get on with magpies then, there seems to be plenty of both around here.?

We have five magpies and countless big crows who come to the bird table every day. But we have pheasants too, and although they seem to be frightened of their own shadow at the best of times, if they are on the bird table, none of the crows or magpies will come near. They just line up on the fence like a row of nightclub bouncers in an identity parade.

You lucky thing, Barbara! There are lots of Jays around me in the Forest but it's rare to see one as anything but a quick glimpse as it shoots over the road into the trees. They are beautiful birds I think.

Surprised at Magpies being scared of Pheasants WT, I didn't think they were scared of anything! Me neither........and I presumed Pheasants would be scared of everything Even my cats skulk away when they see the pheasants.

I didn't know that Jays did that either Barbara although it would explain why I have so many acorn seedling in my garden - we are surrounded by acorn trees as well.
Years ago we rarely saw any Jays - these days they are always pinching food from the tits and as lovely as they look they are aggressive devils and don't mind grabbing the odd blue tit for lunch.
Mind you the worst birds for ganging up on their own are Magpies I think - I once watched them kill one of their own kind - horrible - they don't believe in a quick death.

Ooh dear, I'm glad I've never seen that!! Can easily imagine it though cos they're pretty evil. Mind you I've seen Chickens do it. Horrible. And getting back to Pheasants, they are related to Chickens and Bantams, and the males have some vicious spurs so maybe the Mags and the cats have got the right idea!!!!
