Isn't cola a diuretic, jlottie? - I should have thought that would have the opposite effect. I used to drink lemonade when I had an upset stomach (before I had the citrus problem) though - had forgotten that. Glad to hear both the girls feeling better though

Wow! VERY good advice Juliet - sorry I didn't see it before - rushing to make haste! Thanks very much for being so thorough - I wish my doctor had your attitude! I might even print it out with your avatar and tell daughter the Food Fairy sent it with orders to eat! She can't read that well yet so might actually believe me. We like fairies round here so it might work!

The capsules I use aren't suitable for small children, but there is apparently a syrup which is, so it might be worth asking your pharmacist about this. Loperamide should not be given to children under 4, and only to under 12's if prescribed.

Oops, sorry, - scrub that one then. I looked at the leaflet I got with my capsules & it said to give the syrup to children of 4-8 but didn't say it had to be prescribed. I was actually thinking I should add that it's probably not the best idea for bugs anyway if the diarrhoea is the body's way of getting whatever it is out of the system - just thought it might be useful for those times when it's dragging on & on ... Some other things I thought of though - Back when I could tolerate tea I used to make very weak black tea with a large spoonful of brown sugar & have that with my toast & marmite the day after an upset. It's not a substitute for water but it's a good addition when you're getting fed up with just drinking water! And back when I could tolerate tomato sauce I used to have spaghetti on toast when I was recovering - nice & plain & mostly carbohydrates. Once they've stopped running to the loo all the time get them eating plenty of fruit & veg again though - they'll need it! PS 4P Oh that brings back memories - where's the nicknames thread? - I had completely forgotten, but my mum used to call me fairy bluebell

Anti-diarrhoeals are not all that useful for acute diarrhoea. These viral infections are always self limiting and it is much more important to concentrate on fluid and electrolyte (salt) replacement, hence the emphasis on such preparations as Dioralyte.
Gastroenteritis in children sometimes causes lactose intolerance which can cause the diarrhoea to grumble on for quite a long time in otherwise well children. It can be a bit of a nuisance but generally resolves with time

What's Dioralyte, Dr Bill? - I've not come across that one.

Ah - sounds useful. I'd probably be intolerant of them though, knowing me There's nothing to be intolerant of. They are simply a carefully calculated solutions of salts and glucose which occur naturally in the body and tend to be lost in diarrhoea. There are other brands and several flavours, but they all taste predominantly of salt so some people find them difficult to take, but they really are the important part of the treatment of acute diarrhoea

PS Sleepy, am I imagining things or has your sig changed slightly?! I seem to remember it saying "If a man speaks in a forest and there isn't a woman there to hear him, is he still wrong?". I asked R and he said "yes, because he shouldn't speak when there isn't a woman to hear him." Well trained, isn't he?!

Dorylite (sp) is supposed to have the same salt/sugar balance as blood I seem to remember, so you could be ok with it.
Dr Bill? Am I right?

Though I am unable to tolerate a surprising range of things ... tap water, for instance (it's the chlorine, before you ask)

Young 4P is eating, getting up and arguing, so much better thanks! It's such a relief that we let her have another MacD'S today - this is unheard of as they are usually only an annual event. I have had to explain that now she's better I won't be offering biscuits, Lucazade and jam doughnuts every 5 minutes from now on! So nice to see her looking more like her usual self.

Oh phew that's a relief 4P, to you and me! Keep us posted with her progress - hopefully it's just something nasty that she is shaking off.
