I know that you're all busy people, but as I'm a very nosey woman I wondered if any of you have time for hobbies? Apart from gardening of course, which must be No.1 in my book! ;D

I would love to have a hobby but what with working full time and having this new massive garden to look after plus two young children its proved very difficult. I'd really love to be able to paint, watercolours and oils...... I also have a partner who needs a LOT of attention as well

If you are going to talk dirty talk in code, like what Sweetleaf and Plocket do.
Somethink like 'And the lock on my front door needs regular attention'.

poor sweetleaf if it is all men!!
My poor man, he has to have constant attention, it drives me mad, doesn't matter really as to the quality of the attention either - if I'm moaning at him thats good to because at least its something directed at him! problem is, I'm the opposite, I like my space

I can see which way sleepys mind is going, but I shall let him stew, his fantasies are bound to be a lot more entertaining than the truth!

Sweetleaf, how did you get into pre 1900 japanese pottery? did someone give you something to start you off? A tiny little vase was given to me by my mother, she received it from her brother who was in the merchant navy...poor man died of consumption aged 22. Anyway I digress, all I had was one vase but my research indicated it was one of a pair originally , so I decided to try and track down the other. The rest as they say, is history. Now I have a cabinet which groans with them, the oldest is from 1825

wow thats very impressive. Are like typical willow pattern or am i'm being very ignorant now?

Post by sweetleaf on Nov 30, 2006 17:50:24 GMT
Willow pattern was exclusively produced for export after the borders were opened for trade, so I woudnt have that in my collection, mine are not mass produced but signed originals made by craftsmen. ;D Anything after 1900 can be viewed as cheap export quality Im afraid, except for studio pottery and command very poor prices.

Our children have left home now so there's plenty of time for hobbies (in theory)
I used to collect Clarecraft Discworld Figures but they've stopped making them...
I draw and paint: watercolours. coloured pencils and acrylics. Also like 'playing'....I made peg-doll portraits of my sisters, and have made a few others (Cleopegtra, Geisha Pegs, Fairie Peg etc) Having a go at patchwork at the moment....absolutely useless at it! (but enjoy it anyway). Often paint my own bd and yuletide cards.
OH and I have a couple of telescopes & belong to the local astronomical society. I don't get to meetings as often as I'd like because of work. The garden shed roof rolls off and we have one of our scopes on a concrete plinth in there for observing planets, moon and stars...lovely.
Reading...Sci-Fi/Fantasy mostly. Also battling through (and enjoying) Richard Dawkins 'the God Delusion' at the moment.
Cooking curry. (it's an art in itself)
e-mailing 4P....and the MB. ;D

Having a full-time job and looking after the kids while Mrs FA is at work is fairly time consuming but I do occasionally have a round of golf. I'm also a member of a local astronomical society and occasionally get round to looking at the stars through a telescope. Don't do it very often at the moment though - I seem to have lost a bit of interest for some reason.
I also go and watch Ipswich Town play football occasionally (some would say they only actually play football occasionally !) and I watch a fair bit of sport on the telly, except for rugby which is the worst team sport ever invented.
Sadly, that's about it, except for the garden of course and the MB !!

If I hadn't got a young daughter and 2 grandchildren I would by now be: painting and drawing all the time as that's what I was trained in, sewing - made quite a few patchwork quilts for my family, reading more often - anything but I do love sci fi, writing and illustrating all the books I have notes for! I don't have much time to do any of them really but I HAVE to garden, and I'm still knee deep in the Gardening Club at school. I would like the time to go to the cinema more often as I love films, would like to listen to more music, and I still harbour some ambitions to keep bees and have a go at sculpture and pottery again.......one day.

Ok, well I draw and paint, but should do more and enjoy photography. I like cooking, reading, I'm a novice knitter, I sew, make paper, have done a bit of basic bookbinding, make beads - oh I do lots of crafty things put it that way! Of course I love gardening, particularly my clems. I keep a scrapbook of "stuff" that I like, mostly botanical pictures. I keep holiday diaries, but not a daily journal - have done since I could write.
I collect dice, blue marbles, miniature teddies (under 10cm), postcards (but not just any old postcard, they have to mean something to me like somewhere I've been or it's been sent to me), Spode mugs, cat books (although the collection has been thinned over the years!) and Mother of Pearl buckles. And I'm starting to build up a collection of gardening books that are related to clematis.
I want to find something really unusual to collect but haven't decided on what yet!

I seriously want to learn French to a level where I can read, write and converse in it but I know that I'll never get time while the kids are young to do it. I also used to enjoy watching the World Origami Championships on telly every year but can't afford it now, because it's only on paper view.......... ;D FA x

HAHAHA FA! I haven't seen you around much recently sweetie, and when I have you've seemed a bit down. Are you ok?
If you really really want to learn French the best think is to make friends with a French person. My French is far from good but I have a French friend who helps, corrects and has made a massive difference to my spoken French. And she's boosted my confidence!

Hello Plocket I've been here, just lurking a bit more than posting lately. I'm ok but certain things have got me down in recent weeks and I haven't been my usual exuberant self !! Thank you for caring, though. I don't know any French people I guess I'll just have to find a way to learn it on my own. FA x

I like photography too! but haven't got your skills....should also paint a lot more.....(loved your clem paintings BTW) also have a monster collection of beads (make bracelets etc or just gloat over them) I inherited my son's marble collection when he left home and promptly used the blue ones in a mosaic brick/stone/marble patio outside the coinservatory door! I like being creative and the conservatory is full of my stuff, fabrics, paints, easel, fymo, pencils, beads etc. I collect books too, apart from Terry Pratchett I collect astronomy books, science, egyptology and gardening books (of course). Miniature stuff, anything quirky....loads of star Trek & Dr Who tat. I also collect funny bd cards and have a huge box full of them. OH thinks I'm mad..... ;D

FA-Won't your kids do french at school? Could you not get them some of those DVDs or CDROMs that teach them french to get them a head start and then you could practise by conversing with them?
Then you could do what I had to do every week in my French at school and write a letter to your penpal Pierre and start it with "Aujourd hui, je vais te parler au sujet le sport" or summet like that. Every week I had to write this guy a letter saying exactly the same stuff but about a different subject such as the cinema, or sport or shopping. Good job he didn't exist, he'd probably have taken his own life after reading that drivel week in week out.
