Well I may be a bit early but I've just done 2 hanging baskets with 2 White and 2 Orange trailing Begonias in each. They are now hanging from the roof in the Poly Kennel. I need to get them going earlier as I lost them last year when FIL over watered them when they were just sprouting and he'll be looking after them in 8 weeks time when I go on hols. I've used the solid terracotta plastic baskets with the reservoir in the bottom, filled bottom with polystyrene bits to just above the drainage holes and then compo with 2" of sand/compo mix on the top, sunk a smaller plastic pot in the middle to water into and then gently nestled the Begonias in, 3 had shoots showing already Sweatleaf, I've put 2 wire baskets on one side in readiness for our Globe Baskets. Need to start to think about what to put in them, although Susie made some good suggestions in this thread, will have a look back. Bet your more organised than me and have some seeds or something growing already ;D

Youre right. I have some very special begonias and some Nepeta, and have found the perfect "Trunk" for my standard. Also got some Aubretia to fill the gaps, and have perforated 2 washing machine dosing balls for watering .(brand new, no contaminants) I have some strong plastic coated fencing wire to fix the ball together. and am now waiting for OH to find me the wire cutters he put away "safe."

Love Begonias in hanging baskets, the brighter the colour the better. Unfortunately I won't be having any this year as work means I will be away a far bit and it's difficult to get someone to water them Has anyone any tips for keeping baskets going in the hotter weather, are the water retaining granules as good as they say.

Hi GG, I've used the granules and they are good. Also when I go away I tend to take my baskets down and pop them in old washing up bowls with a bit of water in them, this works fine if you don't use plastic liners I then put them in the shade under my patio table or some other shadey place in the garden.

Have decided I might do a couple of hanging baskets this year and try the water retaining granules. What does everyone put in their baskets plant wise and are there any particular plants that are more tolerant to being without regular water. Mine may be left for a couple of days without water.
