Bought 15 Allium sphaerocephalon bulbs the other day (I know it's a bit late, but the bag was just 50c ;D) and have just planted them ... really hope they do well! Kicking myself I didn't buy more, so will go in tomorrow in the hopes that they have some left ... cheers ...

Good idea Canary Creeper and I hope that you get some. I am a "offer" buyer as well. Sometimes I even wait just a little too late.

I LOVE buying bulbs late! Our local nursery has a huge table of amazingly cheap bulbs atm which you can pick over and make sure you get only good ones. I have been back three times so far..........still trying to resist the HUGE box of English Bluebells (10 for £1), Hyacinths (3 for £1) and various Alliums (5 or 10 for £1)......it's sooo tempting.....and then all the Tulips........

I have loads of bluebells in the garden - blue and pink - I lift and throw quite a few every year as they become over-crowded I think they are the native English variety - I check to see if they match the description - if anyone would like some let me know - but they can be a bit invasive - I also have lily of the valley that grows like a weed!!!! x Tig

Oh Tig, I envy you. I cannot get Lily of the valley to grow. Mind you I've only tried it in one place so it obviously doesn't like it. Do they like wettish conditions?

The lily of the valley is growing in an east facing border, under acers and through a hardy fuchsia, out of the border and into the grass ;D It has spread under the fence and into next doors garden as well - if either of you two ladies would like some roots I am sure it will survive a journey by post in a jiffy bag in the spring!! You have been warned about its spreading habit though x Tig

Knowledge and wisdom ;D And a wicked sense of humour! Wee you are so right, I had loads growing under a hedge that was about 5ft deep, the hedge got a good old thinning and I dug up and replanted the Lilly of the Valley, hardly any of them grew again

Tig and Wee, do Lily of the Valley have acid/lime preferences? If lime, I've got just the spot and may .... cheeky moment here ... take you up on that, Tig, come spring! A couple of crocuses are flowering, and the tete-a-tete daffodils are about to flower; the bargain Alliums have all come up, and the tulips which I left in the ground last year seem to be fine ... at least, most of them seem to be up ;D But not a sign of the grape hyacinths I planted in the front ... I think they must have been cat-pooed out of existence ... cheers ...

My soil is neutral cc - so I don't know if they have a preference - WT may know for sure. I am happy to share my Lily of the Valley (with the warning that it can spread through a whole border!!) I have plenty! Just let me know when you want some ;D Tig

They seem to have a preference for pavement ;D Probably the free drainage. They are not convinced they want to live in my clay. Alive but not really kicking First few bulb Irisis are flowering now.

I've lots of snowdrops out & a few crocus, just noticed them today. When Mum died, before we sold the house I dug up lots of the Lily of the Valley, we had never had any success, just a scrubby few leaves & no flowers. hers seem to have taken off now, after about 3 years, and they flowered last year, what a treat.

I thought todays Tip of the Day was good. If you've just moved home - or maybe if you're just forgetful - mark the position of emerging bulbs now, while they're a novelty. That way you can find them to move them later if you want.Have got Tulips, Daffs, Snowdrops, Crocus, Alliums, Bluebells, Star of Bethlehem, Grape Hyacinths Mmmm can't think what else. I never remember exactly where the bulbs are and could really do with marking their position becasue I usually end up coming across some when I'm planting bits and bobs, not sure what with though I tend to have bits of short cane/twiggy bits throughout the borders to mark where some plants are. Any ideas maybe just coloured pot labels.

I have a rough idea where my bulbs are, but your can bet I always manage to splice some when I am planting things out late summer. I reckon I have too many to mark though - only thing I could think of using would be those coloured glass pebbles you can buy, but chances are they would get moved during the year

Ah yes, where are the bulbs. In my own garden I know most of the time but at MssK I fear some get chopped. There are tulips everywhere and unlike in my own garden I leave them in. And intergrow plants in summer so... It is a survival of the lucky trial. I'll see this Spring which made it and probably won't miss the ones that didn't.
I had yellow labels but they are ugly hence I lost track after removing them.
