I'm rather keen on black plants (as near black as possible) whether it be leaves or flowers. I've got a bit of a collection but need more ideas. Can suggest some "black" hardy plants that I could or should aim to have in my garden?

Thompson and Morgan often do a section in one of their leaflets with the heading of "Black ??" - here's a link for you Plocket. On page 2 there is a Pansy called Black Ruffled Rose which looks very interesting. plants.thompson-morgan.com/list/black-garden-plants

Hi Plocket ... there are also some purple-leaved amaranthus which you can grow from seed - I grew a couple this year (Fothergills, I think) and they were quite stunning - and are still going strong. Only problem is that slugs like them ... cheers ...

I guess it would have helped if I said what I already had, that I can remember anyway!!!
Sambucus nigra “black lace” Black hollyhock Heucheras licourice, palace purple and obsidian Pennisetum setaseum Rubrum Black lily turf Iris chrysographes Pansy “bowles black” Tulipa Queen of the Night and tulipa Black Parrot A black flowered hellebore Primula juliae "silver laced" Geranium midnight reiter Phormium “platt’s black”
I'm going to have to look up the frit and the amaranthus - thanks for those suggestions, and I'll take another gander at the T&M list - I haven't looked at that for a long time now.
Thanks you guys! <hug>

Hi Plocket ... there's another one which I couldn't remember yesterday ... been scouring my (very disorganised) noted: viola labradorica. It has really lovely dark purple/greenish leaves. A friend gave me a clump of this - now several clumps - and it's stunning. Apparently self-seeds everywhere, but you could not get a prettier self-seeder! ... cheers ...

I shouldn't think it is hardy but I bought a Black Cuban (or Cuban Black) chilli plant from the Devon Chilli Farm earlier this year. It is a very pretty little thing, proper black leaves, purple flowers, black berries which have just turned red (which looks a bit weird). It is one of the only plants I have seen with true black leaves. It is rather small but a group of three grown together would look effective.

I see T&M have a "special offer" in the Times today for black Hyacinths - a snip at 8 quid a bulb. There you go P. - get a nice clump of those going...

Hi Plocket, I think you also forgot to put any Acquilegias on your list - can't believe you haven't got a magpie! - have you also got a black barlow? I also have Viola molly sanderson, which has the blackest flower I've ever seen, and Heuchera ebony & ivory, which has very dark leaves (not really black, but would fit well with a black border). And annuals on my list for next year - seeds of Nigella choc ice and Nemophilia pennie black. I've also seen in the black pages of a catalogue (from Hayloft plants: www.hayloft-plants.co.uk/content.aspx?page=HOME) Agapanthus black pantha, Eupatorium rugosum chocolate, Iris germanica night owl, Helleborus orientalis hybrid blue metallic lady (that one's a very dark blue-black), and Salvia discolor (which is only half-hardy but very pretty). Oh - and Geranium pratense black beauty, which has blue flowers and very dark, almost-black leaves, apparently - I know Obelixx has that one, so you could ask her how black they are!

Doh! Thanks Juliet - I have got Aqui Magpie and Black Barlow - well seedlings of the later anyway, and Magpie all over the garden And I've got a Geranium pratense Purple Heron which isn't looking too happy at the moment so I might have to look at Black Beauty to replace that! The selection you've suggested, and the website, are lovely - I'll make a note and might well try some of those, particularly the scabious. I love the Eupatorium rugosum but think it's a bit big for my garden, and I might have to give that salvia a go too. Thanks Juliet! <hug>
