Hi all,
There's what seems to be a climbing fuchsia down the road from us, but it's not Lady Boothby. It's climbing in the sense that it forms an enormous wall shrub - sort of like a pyracantha. The lady who owns it gave me a cutting yesterday, and I've searched the web for identification but no luck. The leaves are very small and sort of pinkish-reddish; the flowers are cerise and purple. The parent plant is about 2.5 m high, and obviously it is hardy. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Any ID please (sorry for lack of photo, I have major camera problems) ... cheers ...

It rather sounds to me as though it is a hardy fuchsia that hasn't be cut down and there are so many varieties, including some lovely variegated ones. The most common seems to be the Fuchsia magellanica. From your description it could be something like this. RF

Oh dear, RF, I'm going to have to get that camera sorted - no, it's nothing like Fuchsia Magellanica or the other common hardy varieties. Both the leaves and flowers are very small, the leaves pinkish red, and it's growth habit is 'straight up' rather than bushy ... I've searched all the fuchsia sites and can't find it ... cheers ...

Sorry CC - I was given one last year at the Nursery where I go to and he has over 100 different sorts there. I will ask if I can have a peek in his private greenhouse and see if I can see anything.
Mind you as they are only just getting their leaves, it might be better to ask him.

That would be great .... a place with over 100 fuchsias, what heaven Well the place that we go to is a family business. The parents started the Nursery and they had 3 sons - all went in to gardening and now Olaf has the GC, another son has the perennial side and supplies to all of Europe and the third son does something else. All middle men are cut out and I reckon they are all worth a fortune. However the mothers hobby is fuchsia's - any sort, any shape, and she makes sure that she keeps her hobby going at her son's expense!!!! Wherever he goes he always brings her something special back in way of fuchsia's. We have left a lot of money there throughout the years and I don't begrudge any of it. The plants are A1 and a couple of Euros more than elsewhere, but the whole family is so nice and friendly and we are on familiar terms with them all. Olaf specialises in Roses and you should see his collection - breathtaking........and he did his apprenticeship in France and England so my UK friends love going to him as he speaks English - just refuses to speak English to me.!! hi C.C i have a fuchsia outside that has leaves which are a mixture of green ,pink, and grey. i think it is fuchsia versicolor but am not 100% on this, i suppose it woul be possible to train this as a wall shrub. i cut it down to about a 1ft in spring and it grows to 5ft during the summer.

RF ... have been absent from the boards for a couple of days due to incredible work pressure, logged in just now - and you and Beanie have cracked it! Yes, this is the one - mine you, the one down the road is a lot taller than 5 foot - give that it's climed all the way up the areaway, must be at least 12 foot! It's a real beauty, but my cutting died , so I'll have to beg another one off the owner ... cheers ...

Hi CC and beanie.
I am pleased that we have cracked it. The photo is of my Versicolor and thanks for the tip about green shoots beanie - up to now I haven't had any, but will certainly keep an eye open for them.
