These are my Clematis plugs I got from T & M - they are growing away really well Should I pinch the tops out to make them bushy?

I'm sure Plocket will let you know what to do with your clems. They look lovely BTW. I just wanted to ask how is the expectant mum. Has she had the stitch out yet & when is baby due. ( I have got the right person haven't I)? Janet.

They are looking good Isabella. Pinching out isn't really necessary as long as you remember to plant them deeper than they are at the moment. Doing that will encourage the plants to put on more shoots from the base. What clematis are they then?

2 x Miss Bateman 2 x Ville de Lyon 2 x General Sikorski Because I had ordered other plants the Clematis were £4.99 - I thought a bargain Thanks Plocket

We were out yesterday and just happened to go past a GC, screech of brakes - lets have a quick look - don't have to buy anything!!!
Loads of Clems - and they were all pinched out. I just happened to see one of the gardeners and I asked him if Clems should be pinched out or not (wanted to tell him that it wasn't right) and he said - Oh No - Clems are always best left (that took the wind out of my sails, I can tell you) and I said - great, then why are these clems all pinched out?
Fair question I thought, although my OH has disappeared. And said gardener looked around to see if anyone was near us - place was empty and said that they pinch them out so that they get bushier and they can add a couple of Euro's to the price although it wasn't quite right, but people didn't know for the most part anyway.
Needless to say I bought a Clem at a reduced rate and went and found my OH waiting at the car laughing at my cheek.

You mean you didn't believe me Rosefriend??? Actually it's quite normal for nurseries to pinch them but as the guy says it's to make them bushier. If you are buying clems it's better to go for a more mature plant, and no matter what age you should look at the base of the plant for woody growth, and as many stems coming out of the soil as possible. So what clem did you buy?

Oh I believed you Plocket - definitely - I just wanted to hear what kind of excuse he would give - I didn't reckon with him telling me the truth though. I was already to say that it shouldn't be done etc.
Well I bought Warszanwska Nike and then went to another GC and ended up with two more - Jan Pawel 11 (John Paul 11) and Vyvyan Pennell (both older by the looks of it) which I have planted together to grow up a small tree - hope it works.

PML! I wonder what he would have said if he'd told you they should be pinched out and then you started!!
Ooooh I've got Vyvyan Pennell - it should be flowering any day now for the first time in two years! I'll have to look up John Paul 2 though.

Well on the way by my OH asked the same question and when I said that I would have said that Plocket said that they shouldn't, he started laughing, - must admit I cracked out too.........I would probably been admitted somewhere.......
Lovely that you too have Vyvyan Penell - mine is flowering already - is it true that it flowers differently later in the year.

Wouldn't it be a bit boring if everyone were clemmed Jenny? Heavens that sounds close to "cloned" ;D I love seeing all the photos, and as you say they really are an inspiration. And you are so lucky to have space for more Jenny - I'm quite green with envy! Px
