On last night's Chelsea they mentioned a new type of Delphinium, developed specially for light, sandy soils. Do Delphiniums not normally like this type of soil? That could explain why I don't have a lot of luck with them

I missed that bit! Although I have a lovely blue Delphinium on my patio - self seeded and in reallyreally sandy soil - it doesn't seem to mind. And because it's really sunny there I don't get many slugs in that bit either.....

I expect I'll end up buying a couple as usual. They just come back really weak the next year and don't usually make much growth or flowers

I was told the trick with Delphiniums is to get really good strong roots on them and they will reward you well in the future. If your buying smallish plants you should put it in a bigger pot and snip the flowering stem off so energy is put into a better root system. It seems to have worked for me this year Or you could buy bigger more established plants

That's worth knowing thanks CBB....I've grown a mini delphinium from seed this year...and this arvo I potted them all on they seem to be a bit slow taking off as when I took them out of the 3" pots they didn't have a huge amount of root....do they like moist soils usually then?

They like a regular watering CPB but need well drained soil. After flowering if you remove the head before it starts to seed you can get a secind smaller flush of flowers too
