Hi all,
I will be completely re-vamping a bed, and already have plants ready in pots. However, at present the bed is home to lots of happy (albeit wet!) annuals, so I was hoping to wait until autumn before pulling them all up. The plants I have waiting are seed-grown hollyhocks and lupins - all of which have already grown huge - as well as an Echium and a few fuchsias. I know the fuchsias will happily stay in their pots for another couple of months; my main concern is the hollyhocks and lupins - they've already been re-potted a couple of times, are now in 9" pots and the roots are showing at the bottom. Will they last until, say, September? Any advice appreciated ... and sorry if it's a silly question! ... cheers ...

Yeah....as long as the plants are kept watered and fed weekly, it shouldn't be a problem. You will find that they will not get as big as their planted cousins as their roots are restricted somewhat.
Hope this helps

Don't worry, think of all the plants sitting in garden centres waiting to be sold off. If necessary, if you find the roots going round in circles when you take them out of the pot, tease them apart gently before replanting. Sometimes, if this is not done, the roots will continue to go round and round, never breaking free into the surrounding soil of the open bed. They rarely thrive, and sometimes die altogether. Very easy to avoid.

I'm sure they'll survive CC if the roots are only just showing. It's like weedorcas say it's when the roots get all congested and start to go round and round inside the pot that they suffer, your a while off that though so don't worry. Feed and water like Andy say's

Thanks Dorcas and Chuckles - actually, I did the bed-clearing operation about a week ago (the roots were going round and round) - and now two of the lupins are about to flower ;D! First time I've beed able to grow good healthy specimens - and the slugs haven't been at them, don't know if it's because I've given them copper collars, or because they're big and sturdy enough to resist slug attack ... cheers ...
