I've a hankering for a climber/rambler (not sure if there's a difference) to go on the front and back walls: front - east-facing, pale colourwash background, back - west-facing(!) red brickwork background.
Haven't decided on the support yet, but probably wires through vine eyes, and there's scope for a lot of rose... and they'll be planted in the ground, not tubs.
Ideas, anyone?

It really depends what you want, OM! Any colour preference? I adore 'Albertine', she's a vigorous rambler so does require a bit of tlc, but in full flush she's a beaut.

Hi OM,
Bought a 'rambling rector' this year and it's been lovely. Smallish, white petals with yellow heart and a beautiful scent. It is very vigorous, can grow to over 30'. First saw in on GW last year - looked lovely growing up through a very mature tree.

I was recently visiting Dunham Massey gardens & there was an amazing perfume in the air. We eventually found the smell & after a bit of detective work found it was Filipes rose probably Kiftsgate. I deserately wanted one but then I realised it only flowered until July. I thought at one point it was Rosa Moschata as they look very similar. I think the perfume on the smellometre is abut the same for both so I may get the two. Sorry, a bit of a ramble. After researching we are going to visit Kiftsgate Court next week. I will report when we are home. We are also going to Hidcote Manor. I think they are quite close together. Janet.

If you like the look of apple blossom, a rambling rose i would recommend highly is 'Francis E. Lester. I grew it in another garden, and hope to in this one. It becomes smothered in trusses of small pink/white flowers which rain does not spoil.

Hi OM are we talking one or several? I like ramblers, less work. Not so fussy when it comes to pruning. They also tend to be more vigerous in growth What have you been offered so far Kiftsgate, sport of R.filipes, clusters of small white flowers, flowers once in June/July. A mature plant is stunning when in full flower. Its a beast will reach 50 + foot. It is really at home when climbing through trees. Maybe a real bu**er to train against a wall. Albertine, yes a good plant mine is climbling a pergola. will possibly only get to about 10 -12 foot normally used as a pillar rose, pink flowers Ramblong Rector. R. moschata the musk rose from Willy Shakespeares time. Double white flowers in clusters, very fragrant, Plocket and I have the single flowered R.moschata.Will flower in June/July reaching approx 20 foot up and across. Francis Lesteer another moschata hybrid but a little smaller reaching approx 15 foot up and across pink/white single flowers again fragrant. All off those will I'll throw a couple more in for you. Two modern plants Bobby James (rambler) similar to R.filipes kiftsgate but easier to train will get 30 footish and Parkdirektor Riggers (climber) has red single flowers, medium small 10/12 foot. If it was me choosing then in addition to the above, for climbers I would look at Deprez a Fleurs Jaunes, Deschamps and Cecile Brunner climbing variety and Gloire de Dijon for Ramblers I would look at Maigold, Excelsa, Ruga and if I had the room Pauls Himaalayan Musk. A walk round my mate just up the road from you may give you some ideas

Well, thanks for your collective imput, rosemother, shrubrose, grannyjanny, weedorcas, chuckles, fozzie... I went a bit quiet on this, waiting for the ideas to germinate.
Plenty there for me to look through, and inspiration enough to get the wires up!
OM.
