Hi all, I grew this from seed in the spring. The seed packet (T&M) states that it is a short-lived perennial if sown in autumn, and the T&M website says "As an evergreen, Mediterranean native, give some protection during hard winters". Yet it's described as a hardy annual. Should I leave it in the ground over winter - will it come back next year? Has anyone had any experience of this? totally confused ... cheers ...

Hi CC! Aaahh, Cerinthe major purpurpescens - absolutely my top favourite annual - absolutely beautiful is it not? There is no superlative good enough IMO. I have never had it self seed in my garden - but my garden is very cold in winter, so I always collect the beautifully black, big and plentiful seeds and resow in the Spring. It's always a mystery to me why these seeds are so pricey as they are very easy to collect from a very easy to grow plant...I collected 300 seeds last year from my plants before I got a bit bored! The seed companies charge around £3 for a packet of 15.........ridiculous!

Thanks to both of you ... it is an absolutely scrumptious plant. And yes, the seed price is a rip-off ... I've already started collecting seeds ... cheers ...

Hi CPB. We visited Arley Hall gardens in Cheshire about 7 weeks ago and they had a Cerinthe in full flower & it was a huge plant. It was probably a plant from last year. We were in Dublin a couple of years ago & we were staying near the Beaumont hospital in a house with a walled garden & they had had nasturtians in flower all winter climbing up the walls. It might be worth leaving it in just to see if it flowers early. PS. My OH was so impressed when I said "Oh look at the Cerinthe Major? Isn't it beautiful" Janet.
