Has anybody ever grown this (also known as 'trumpet vine') from seed? And if so - any tips? ... cheers ...

No help at all I know but it grows from cuttings really easily, have done them in the garden where we holiday in Portugal. Responds well to a good pruning too and can be trained against a wall. This one is about 7ft high.

Thanks, Chuckles. How I envy you have a part-time garden in Portugal - my favourite country in the whole world!! That's where I first saw this plant, and thought it could never grow here ... but the other day I was walking around the area and saw one which is obviously several years old. Stunning (although even if I do get it creeping up my wall, it won't be quite the same as vinho tinto and grilled sardines ) ... cheers ...

hi c.c. i grew this from seed about 5yrs ago and it has never flowered so far. this year it was due to go on the compost heap. but a contributer to the site persuade me to give it more time . I've noticed though it seems to make ariel roots similar to ivy. so maybe it needs to be attached to the wall before it flowers. maybe someone can give more onfo about this.

Ooooh CC it's the Goats cheese Portugese bread and Olives that do it for me and of cause the Vinho Tinto, one of the nicest I've had was a Porches wine but which one I don't recall. Roll on 8/9 ;D
Anyway back to Campsis ;D Have you thought of asking for a couple of bits to try cuttings with, now would probably be a good time.
Beanie as far as your non flowering one goes, the flowers are all mainly at the top of the one in the photo and we don't get many flowers growing below about 5ft, as I said this one is approx 7ft high. It grows up the side of a wooden poled walkway, it sort of leans against it and I tie in the occasional branch to encourage it to grow upwards. We also get ariel type shoots that grow lower down but I snip these off.

thanks chuckles. mine's in a big pot at the moment I wonder if that could be the problem. a friend has one that covers the side of her house and is usually full of flowers that's the reason I grew it in the first place

Oh Chuckles, I envy you going back in a few weeks. We were there in June - third visit in two years - and OH practically had to drag me on to the plane back!!! Will try and beg a cutting of the Campsis - I don't know the people at all, but generally find that people are happy to give cuttings if you ask nicely <grovelsmiley> ... cheers ...
