Do you think a single colour bed would work to bring light to the far end of my garden under the tree? Following my thread below I have lots of ideas for plants and was thinking about a white colour scheme - with cyclamen, fritillaria, epimedium, campanula, shasta daisy, snowy woodrush and dicentra. I already have lots of snowdrops under there too which continues the white theme... So, asking the experts here cos I am so new to all this!! will it look ok or do you think I should go for a brighter colour? A pic of the tree is here TIA Jardack

I'd go with the white theme Jardack - it sounds lovely. Don't forget to put some Epimedium in too: E. stellulatum 'Wudang Star' has white flowers and is evergreen - very useful! And E. x youngianum also has white flowers but is deciduous.

Well whatever you have on your list might not be available to be prepared to be flexible!! If you are positive you want specific plants, perhaps special ones, you might have to shop online Enjoy!!!

I think white would be perfect. i have sent some photos of ones I have growing in much the same situation. At night they all look particularly lovely. sorry, they are mostly close-ups, i have a new camera ;D 1. White form of Campanula persicifolia, from seed 2' 2. White form of Galega officinalis, from seed 4-6' 3. White form of Polemonium, from seed 3-4' 4. White form of Viola cornuta, from cutting 6" 5. White foxglove, from seed 5-6' 6. Astrantia, bought this one. 7. White form of Hesperis matronalis, from seed 3-4' Most of these could be bought as plants, but the ones I grew from seed were very easy. i buy them from Chiltern seeds. Their catalogue has no pictures and they use Latin names, but armed with a picture book, it is a great one, very informative. Sorry, my photos are huge, don't know how to change it!

Ooooh Weed what a fab idea to post pics of the whites you have to help Jardack I have the Campanula and Astrania the same as yours and white is one of my faves to have in the garden, must get more. Might be an idea to look on the White and Cream thread too for more ideas, some aren't named but you can always ask if you see something you fancy

Photos are gorgeous Wee One! The whites just look superb! Have you been to Sissinghurst, Vita Sackville West's garden. My plan is to go this summer sometime.
I am very disappointed with close-ups with my digi camera, so am tempted to buy new again. PJ

That's why I'm taking all these close-ups, my last camera couldn't. I haven't been to Sissinghurst, but of course I've seen photos. Would love to visit one day. I love white flowers, they might even be my favourites.

ooooh all those pics are gorgeous, thank you I love the look of the hesperis (last one) I would try seeds, but I've had no luck with seeds at all this year - none of them have grown so will probably go with plugs and grow them on before planting out if I can. Am even more excited about it now ;D I will make a list out, look in the GC and then online and see where is best value and then get ordering (and digging out the mess that is there Jardack (hoping for some nice weather so I can get started...)

I always have white Cosmos at the end of my garden which is in the shade of a tree too and they have a real luminous quality to them, especially at dusk. I've also got a very young jasmine growing up the fence which will hopefully add some pale colour and scent next year.
I think it's a great idea - thanks for the pics wee dorcas, there's some great plants in there to get me thinking as I'm planning on extending my bed this year.

Hi Jardack, not sure how widely available Hesperis would be as a plant. Try herb growers/ wild flowers , that sort of site. Though, truly, i don't think you'd have much bother with seeds. Perhaps the ones you tried were difficult ones. Never give up!!!! Be a wee terrier like me ;D

Me again, (I was weedorcas earlier)
Hesperis is particularly favoured by the orange-tip butterfly I believe. A bonus.
