This year I have been "pinked" out and its time for a change. Would love some ideas for some deep colours - blue/purple, red and orange for this time of year. Mainly for the middle or back of the beds.

Thanks Chuckles, I did have some up until a couple of years ago - should have taken some cuttings, I must get some more  The Garnet is a lovely colour. ( was looking at some with Alicat on Saturday ;D ) Definitely no more pink  |

Dont know how you feel about crocosmia jlo? I've just put one in - 'lucifer' and it has a lovely deep red colour. They're unfailingly reliable and form a good clump, so good space filler, but they do spread. This is a pic of one from my garden.  |

Oh I am soooo jealous Shrubby! I have had Lucifer for 2 years now and it looks like, yet again, they are NOT going to flower!!  I'm sure I can remember seeing something about this a while back on here. Several people posted about non-flowering Lucifer, but can't remember what the solution was.  |

Jlottie, I think Cornwall has a similar climate to Dublin? If so, what about some cannas - both the flowers and foliage are gorgeous, and there are loads of varieties (I think Andy is the expert here) ... for next year, I was going to experiment with orange/red cannas and purple Liatris ... cheers ...

I've gone for reds and purples this year, although the purples were supposed to be reds!! Mondara, heleniums, penstemons, crocosmia, sedums, and of course the odd clem bunged in  |

Thanks for your ideas, I have lucifer already in another part of the garden but it might be moved, and I'm sure there are a couple of lobelias lurking in the undergrowth if I can find them, I also have monarda which is due to flower but can't remember what colour it is and I already have sedums (think they might be pink) I like the idea of Cirsium rivulare Atropurpureum and the cannas. I've made a start and bought a penestemon Raven and a scabious Black Chilli Pepper (Only popped in to get some bordeaux mix for my blighters). Any suggestions for salvia or the like? |

WT, thats amazing you've identified another of my plants the Tradescantia ;D Love the Aconitum, thats on my list. I had some iris that were brown and yellow but they are a bit early for what I am looking for. Any ideas for deep reds anyone ? BTW this is why I have been "pinked" out and these are "over spill" on the lottie  |

I got a lovely dark red lily from Parkers last year, which flowered wonderfully, but I cannot remember what is was called. What about dark paeonies, or mahogany coloured Hemerocallis, purple Heuchera, or Gladioli? Or Dahlias like Bishop of Llandaff? Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty? I found a very deep reddy- purple Phlox, no name again. Then there are the really rich velvety beetroot coloured English roses.
I'm beginning to go off pink myself now! ;D

Jlottie, one that I'm growing from seed for next year is Echinacea Purpurea (sp.) ... I sowed the seeds about three weeks ago and a couple of them already have true leaves ... perhaps this might be one to try as well ... cheers ...

My list is growing, loved the helenium, Moerheim Beauty, already have heuchera's in the deepest colours, an echinacea, hemerocallis and a Bishop of Llandaff. I'm feeling a lot happier now I have cut most of the malva down, and think I need to jiggle things around a bit and just buy a "few" extras.

I've gone all helenium crazy atm jlottie...I have a few in the border already that are yellow shot through with orange, and today bought a couple that are almost burgundy....luffly plants, they look so nice with the rudbeckias and gaillardias....all perennials ;D

Heleniums are lovely CPB, also love the rudbeckia - funny most the suggestion so far I've got or on my wish list/lust haven't we got great taste in plants ;D

Verbena Bonariensis - lovely airy plant ;D Also have to say Cirsium rivulare Atropupureum as it really is a beautiful plant (I've had a clump in my garden for several years since a good gardening friend bought it for me  - long before it was a trendy plant used at all the shows ). Mine however, has had it's main flush of flowers and at the moment has only got a few flowers on. |

I've got loads of verbena in the garden and I planted a dahlia 'New Baby' this year for the first time - it's an orange pompom and looks great with the verbena. I love orange and purple together and these are both really deep, rich colours which look good even in this rotten weather.

Some lovely suggestions on here. I agree with lots of them, I have Helenium Moorheim Beauty, Penstemons, Verbenas and Erysiums going strong. Another fave for me is Agastache, comes in lots of different colours, and a similar one to penstemons is Phygelius. I have a dusky red one called Devils Tears, I never noticed before the bright yellow throat on the flowers, it's quite striking! |

I'd thought that Agastache weren't fully hardy but after googling Phygelius Devils Tears seems they could be ;D

Hi Jlottie I grew some agastache from seed a couple of years ago, and they seem to get bigger and brighter every year! They barely died down over the winter. I've tried a mixed seed this year, and luckily most of them have flowered already, so I've been able to separate the colours. My penstemons and phygelius do tend to struggle a bit through the winter, okay I'm in the southeast, but they are in a quite exposed site. They seem to pull it back together for the summer after a good haircut. They are very easy to take cuttings from, if I can do it, anyone can! I just plonk bits in the ground, and 9 times out of ten they root. ;D |

Jlottie, Agastache Apache Sunset is a lovely silver leafed variety (smells of aniseed) which needs to be grown in amongst other plants, and Liquorice has very nice blue spikes of flowers, and self-seeds easily (I have it growing all over the place after two years ;D)

i like foxtail lillies, the bulbs double up quickly,and the purple is really a good colour, i posted a pic of some in my new bed if its any help to you. barbara |

Your right JL Dug up my Foxtail Lilies again I can't grow the damm things to save my life. Does anyone have any luck with them. No idea why I can't grow them, all I get is a pathetic display of leaves and nothing else I've moved them again and again, the roots look so healthy, they look like an enourmous spider with big fat succulent legs ;D |
