I went to Arley Hall today and bought Astrantia Shaggy, and primula secundiflora. They were bargains really: there were five Shaggy plants in the one pot so I gave two to my friend, and took the other three home. I've planted one near my other astrantia hoping they will look nice together, and one near the base of my Montana Primrose Star. I've split the primrose too and got three plants out of it - two for my "Margi" bed and one for mum

What a lovely plant, Bagpuss - I want one! It looks a bit like a Saxifrage from the photo. Plocket - I hope you enjoyed your visit to Arley - such an interesting garden and herbaceous border. I bought three sad looking Lithops (living stones), which I repotted in cactus compost topped with golden gravel, and they have perked up no end. ;D

Bagpuss your plant looks like a cross between a Chiosia and a Hebe. It a nice plant but dont know what it is. Yesterday i bought 2 hellibores and 30 White crocus bulbs.I think white in the darker months light up the garden. The 2 hellibores are a creamy white to.

Hi Plocket Apart from using cactus compost and clay pots and grit - pulling out gently the dead leaves, and watering from the bottom only. Loved the pictures - looks better on a sunny day, doesn't it? Tell Margi I have bought a black wig with purple highlights (for Halloween) - to frighten the grandsons and also my daughter and my sister - I look so different. It will make a good plant cosy later, no doubt.

Last week I went to one of my usual tool merchants, looking for a muck fork. They had some but were around £22, decided to carry on with my present one (with short tines, it's 60-70 years old). Today I went to Madingley Mulch to get some electrical clips and plugs, as I went in there were several muck forks which had been marked down from £10.99 to £5, so I bought one. I'm glad I didn't buy one from the other place.

It was obviously meant to be Larkshall - bargain I bet you felt elated when you spotted them (well I do if something I've had my eye on gets reduced!) Tig

Hi Snowowl
The Hellebores and crocus sound lovely. I think I have found what my plant may be. I think it may be an Arabis (and alpine rock cress)

I picked up 2 nice looking, variegated (green/white) hydrangeas called "light o'day" a couple weekends ago. I had to take out a hydrangea that simply was not performing well - lots of foliage, very few blooms - and an azalea that had struggled from the day I got it, to make room for them, but I like the results so far. Just the variegated foliage has brightened up the spots I've put them in. I don't know why the hydrangea I took out, "endless summer" just wasn't blooming. I've had it for over 3 full seasons and it has never put out more than 2 blooms in any one season. And it has been in the same area as another one I have, "summer sunshine" that has bloomed very well. Anyway, I decided I had waited on it long enough and "light o' day" looks really bright and charming. Hope they bllom well.

Oh dear, I went to a GC today, intending only to buy some seed trays. There, waving SOS to me were four Aechmeas with 75% off the stated price of £12 per plant. Well, I couldn't separate the quads, could I? I'll have to see if the gaffer would like a couple for the Show House, otherwise it might start to get a bit crowded in our conservatory. ;D

I bought some Violas, or rather my Mum insisted on buying them for me. Thought I'd make a small effort with winter pots this year.

Outside the door at the moment waiting for deployment are 5m of heather screening, a huge jumbo cloche (have 1 and 1 still to arrive), 3 net covers for the cloches to replace the plastic in the summer, 10 plant support rings, 5m of weed suppressant cloth, some Gardena scissors (a treat for OH, he keeps pinching mine), 8 smaller willow hurdles from Crocus, one larger willow hurdle from Somerset hurdles to hold back the acanthus leaves, a 30 ltr poultry drinker, 12m of 8 x 2 tanalised wood for the next couple of raised beds and two more hares. There is also an assortment of seeds that mysteriously grows now and then.

I bought Lavatera barnsley, thought I 'd give it another go as the one I planted a few years ago didn't survive the winter. Also my indistructable Solanum Glasnevin has died after a severe pruning so I've bought Abutilon Kentish Belle to put in it's place.

Totally agree with Jasmine here, I got to the B&Q last weekend and rescued a whole tray of pansies and one of viola. There are some things you just cant leave sitting there Tig. Thery were half price because they were tatty looking. My granddaughter and I planted them and they've settled in already. Also bought a couple of big bags of compost, 1 of which I'll be using to make a new bed. ;D Got 3 lovely pale pink cyclamen which I've repotted and have on the windowledge. ;D
