I volunteer at a local hedgehog rescue, sadly tomorrow we are going to get our first pygmy hedgehog. Sad, that they are being kept as pets. Sad, that in this day an age despite similar problems, look at what happened with snapping turtles, another living thing has been allowed to be 'fashion accessory'. Sad, that this first one wont be the last, going on usual human behaviour.
A heartfelt plea, if you were thinking of or know anyone that was thinking of getting one, please dont.

I obviously don't mix in 'fashion accessory' circles mm, I've never heard of them! I've never wanted a snapping turtle or a pot bellied pig either! x Tig

Oh well done MM for being a volunteer We have, close by, a wild animal hospital - I have been many times and send a monthly contribution They do a wonderful job - take in anything wild - they have many foxes, road accidents are taken there and of course it wouldnt work without the volunteers I have not the courage to be one I would be in floods of tears all day when they brought in the wounded ickle animals

Me neither JW. When I go up to the RSPCA I just want to take them all home because I feel so guilty about them all being up there without a good home.
Pygmy hedgehogs?! Why on earth would anyone want a hedgehog as a pet?! I can understand the pig maybe (only cos I'd like some) but not half the other stuff that goes in "crazes". People are dumb.

Oh dear I just googled them and BREEDERS are advertising them for sale
Easy to look after it says, etc etc
So this encourages parents to buy one as a pet <angrystamp>

Going completely off Thread, sorry MM, but did anyone see the most awful news items last night about the seal cull - the newsreader was smiling when he announced the clip I dont know how any humans beings can club an animal HALF dead and leave them... The worst thing is Jenny, that they don't LEAVE them half -dead, the b@st@rds SKIN them half dead!!!!! It makes my blood boil!! All the animal charities have run campaigns every year for ages now, raising money to "fight" the cull - and nothing ever changes! That makes my blood boil too!!

Cant help you there RM, probably for the same reason that some people carry their dogs in bags The baby seal cull is shameful!

It's absolutely disgusting what some people do to animals. There are humane ways of going about these things if they really need to happen.
Absolutely disgusting. Fills me with rage.

She's very cute, but IMO doesn't seem like a 'pet', IYKWIM. Hardly soft and cuddly! Why don't people just get a cat or a dog? Pets as fashion accessories is a terrible idea

My pets were all more or less in line with a colour theme at one point although that wasn't by design! lol They were black and white. Then we got Schmickles who was grey tabby and white and now we have Toffee and Pudding who are brown Torti and black/white.

Took this last night, while 'she' was having a wander around. That is seriously cute MM Would it be able to live in the garden and eat the slugs and crawlies? Now that would be a good reason to get one!

Fraid not NO. It really would be too cold for them and they dont hibernate like UK ones do. They are so small that they dont have the fat reserves. At approx £100+ , think I'd rather spend it on plants.

Not that I am turning into an ebay PR officer but I found this
"Live Animals
Live animals or pets other than the exceptions noted here, may not be listed on eBay. The sales of the following items are permitted, provided that the seller guarantees in the listing that the animals will be packaged safely and posted via next day delivery.
Aquarium or pond fish, snails or similar creatures.
Lobsters, crabs, shellfish and other similar creatures that are live when sold but intended for human consumption.
Live insects, crickets and worms used as bait or feeder food for pets."
Well I was worried, I had a good look about and the only hedgehogs I found were on paper or made of china........PHEW
