we've just dug out a dead berberis so have a nice space, I tend to put plants in and then move them so I'm trying to get this one right first time. the plants close by are, Cotinus Royal Purple, variagated Weigela, Miscanthus, Spartium and a pink rose. can you suggest something to fit in, preferably not over 6ft-7ft.

A deutzia oe Abelia would sit in nicely with the cotinus and rose or a Ceanothus would contrast well.

What about one of those lime green Acers? As a zingy contrast to the Cotinus. No flowers on it of course.

Variagated fatsia japonica would be my choice. Or a golden sambucus (can get big but can be pruned hard) or golden Philadelphus.
By the way...good to see someone growing Spartium....probably one of the most gorgeous scented plants around

I have just bought the Abelia grandiflora "Kaleidoscope" which changes it's leaf colour a few times in the year - it could possibly fit in very well.

thanks for all your suggestions, i forgot to mention that i have a Deutsia in that border, also a few of the other suggestions i have elsewhere in the garden. I like the idea of ceanothus as that would bring another colour into the border or the golden sambucus would contrast with the cotinus. the lime green acer would be lovely but the border fronts a pavement and maybe would overhang to much which would mean trimming and spoiling the shape. Oh such indecision, thats the story of my life and why I'm always moving plants. wonder if O.H will take me shopping tomorrow. I feel a splurge coming on.

I bought one of those last year Andy and it died in the pot. I'd seen the idea in a garden mag. maybe worth trying again though. it was an amazing colour while it lasted. I think it was called golden spirit.
