what are lily beetles? are they wee orangey red things, the lilies here are about 25cm high already but thought it was snails eating them, or might it be the dreaded lily beetle......

I was told you could spray them with Pravado bug spray Biggs it is very efective on lillie beetle.

Only way I have ever found of controlling them is picking them off and squishing them (use something to catch them in - they are black underneath and if they fall to the ground just try and find them again!) Once they arrive you need to go on a daily search for the nasty critters x Tig

I stopped having just about everything that was "lilyfied" because of the Red lily beetle years ago. However things have been creeping back although I don't have many of the pests these days.
In the wonderful years before I always had a insecticide at the ready and I even found out that normal fly spray was pretty good as well.
I must admit that I don't like squishing things..

They're great fun to squish Bigs, trust me! And don't forget insecticides don't discriminate between good and bad bugs.

Gosh that's really earrly for them to be out and about. I'll have to go check the lilly bulbs, they're only up a few inches here but you never know. Thanks for telling us all NightOwl.

Probally the same as Adult Vine Veevil--I can do them but they are devils to crunch --I usually crunch these underfoot--but I get satisfaction doing these because I know the damage they can cause with their Grubs eating away the roots.--Bigs

OMG, I heard the screaming today! I caught one in a clear plastic bottle [on the frits], and as I was hunting for more I heard the little squeal, and realised it was coming from the bottle! It was surprisingly loud for such a little bug, like a little cheepy squeek over and over it was. Made me feel quite guilty when I squished it, but I'm over it now.

You mean it was squeaking cos you had it trapped in a bottle Jonah? Oo no, I haven't heard them squeaking! I would get a guilty attack if I did! I'd better put ear-muffs on when I go squishing again!

Yes, Nightowl. I've heard that they shriek to warn others of the attack, but as I hadn't heard it before, didn't realise it was so obvious. No wonder they all take a dive when you catch one. It wasn't pleasant.

Mind you when I went to inspect the lilies tonight I found three snails and two slugs doing even more damage - completely eaten the top off one x Tig

i used to work with a girl who paved her garden, she said there was no point growing any-thing because it either got eaten by bugs or died from disease ;D she was probably right
