I noticed today that I have lots of this in my front lawn where it's been left around the gas tank hole. Any idea's what it is? Whole flowerehead about 6 inches off the ground. We are surrounded by chalkland and have 'weeds' like knapweed and scabious drift in.

Thank you both. I have Googled them and it is indeed the Cuckoo Flower, the leaves gave it away and I didn't include them in the pic!! Apparently, "the saying goes that you hear the first cuckoo when this is in flower", and I did indeed post about my first hearing of the cuckoo the other day and there was another this morning!! ;D ;D Fantastic!! ;D

A little cracker, of the mustard family and edible too!! I did wonder if it was a rocket, very similar and differnet leaves, but it would not be in the garden as it is.
