Thanks again all - Nightowl, I may have to have the other one done in time, but they hope that this one will take the strain and that the other one can wait a few years but I wouldn't find it so scarey next time so I'm happy to wait and see

Hi, Auricula.
No doubt you will feel fine now, but don't go jogging, cycling is OK. I had a replacement hip in 1999 and have cycled over 25,000 miles since then.

Gosh!! It's too hilly to cycle here, but I have an exercise bike which I will use when I get the go ahead - also I intend to swim to keep fit!! Does anyone know if my gardening will be affected long term? Will I be able to kneel down to weed my beds and borders?

You should be alright kneeling, but bending down to pick something up should be avoided. You don't want to dislocate the joint.

Does anyone know if my gardening will be affected long term? Will I be able to kneel down to weed my beds and borders? I invested in a Town & Country metal framed kneeler which folds up to not-a-lot for getting down to the beds and borders, which is an absolute boon. However - <sternwarningsmiley> - do not attempt to do anything like this for at least three months. If you are tempted, and you can't "sit in the shade with a glass in the other and a trowel in one hand to direct 'the man' where to dig", only do so for a few minutes. A year down the line and my gardening is almost back to what it was pre-pain; I just have to think about what I am going to do, and how I am going to do it - that is, in a slightly different way. Patience and hasten slowly and carefully until then. ;D

Thanks Yakram - I'll try to be patient as I know it will be for the best in the long run Anyway - as it never seems to stop raining here, a glass of wine,a book and the summerhouse seems to be a good bet to me!! ;D
