I'm getting a bit confused about what I should and shouldn't put out for the birds....... What about left over pate?
It's high in fat but is is suitable for the birds?

I bet the Starlings would eat it wether they should or not I've just ordered some No Mess bird seed mix from Crocus 2 x 12.75 kg bgs, it has 20% off atm. www.crocus.co.uk/product/_/no-mess-bird-seed-mix/classid.2000008362/I know there is postage on top but I ordered other stuff. The way I see it is it's not much dearer than I normall pay for standard seed and taking into account cost of going to GC or town and having to carry it it's worth the few quid extra to what I normally pay.

it says no added salt....but don't know if it has any in it at all cos I don't have the box that it came in......
I bet the flipping squirrels will eat it before the birds get to it, I put out 3 new fat balls today and they have all gone, I chased away a couple of squirrels before I went to work and when I got home it had all gone!

I saw the blasted tree rat raiding the peanuts this morning Missy - I tell ya they are so brazen, it just looked at me as if to say 'whatcha gonna do - chase me? - I dare ya!' I need to have a plan to keep it off ... (Cat is useless - she is afraid of it )

Well even 'tho I'm still waiting on my new bird table I'm getting success in the garden. I've got several makeshift things on the go and taking advice from here have fat balls, bacon rind, seeds and suet thingys. I have also put out a bit of bread and stuck some apple bits on sticks. I've been off with flu and yesterday saw a ?thrush, it had brown spots on it, and a robin and the little yellow tit. ;D

Really pleased the birds have arrived for you LNG. I put apple out when I have some that are slightly past there best, the Blackbirds love them, I skewer them on a stick or a nail on the fence or trellis etc.
I have a lot of make do things for them to feed from, I left a hanging basket up and put a bit of seed in it, they love it.

Chuckles it's great I'm really pleased to know that they are visiting. That's what I've done with the apple too, I've also put some into the fat feeder for them and broken some on the ground.

Hey ho you would'nt believe it but I've got 2 thrush coming to visit now, I saw them yesterday. Mates perhaps? Saw a really funny sight a little while ago, the thrush was chasing the brown black bird around the garden while the robin crept along the wall and got something from the basket. It was hilarious, worth having flu to be able to see all this happening. I'm so delighted. ;D

I have a thrush who visits quite regular (I think it might be the same one from last year - Chuckles suggested it was a mistle thrush I think) I managed to get piccies of a pied wagtail, collared dove and blue tit today - but through the window using the zooom lens so they may not be very clear, I'll have a look tomorrow. Put a couple of fat balls out to try and lure some in for the RSPB birdcount, what is the betting I hardly see anything tomorrow x Tig

I've put another set of feeders up and managed to see Blue Tits visiting on Sunday afternoon. Of course the builders are back during the day out there so not a lot happens then Mind you the patio is coming along nicely and I'll be able to add the huge saucer birdbath then for them. Or Song Thrush is back. Enjoyable at the moment but it will become repetative and very loud at some point I still enjoy seeing it though. ;D

The robins have found the fatballs today - I was munching my toast looking through the kitchen window watching them this morning, and a little wren went to investigate

Keep the camera handy LNG!! Things will be starting to hot up now. Natural food is becoming scarce and they are thinking about other things so a reliable source of food is great for them. ;D

They are lovely birds LNG but like juliet says we hardly ever see them now. I've not seen one for ages either, some say it's because the Blackbirds fight for their food and even take it off them.

That's very interesting Madon, the 2 thrush seem to be very territorial and are now scaring off the brown and blackbirds ? male and female, when they try to visit. I sat outside this morning watching them. We have a disused factory opposite and the thrush bob around there on the roof ? looking for little insects. When they see the blackbird coming into my garden they fly down and scare him off.

Well my feeders have been filled 3 times today thats 3 of those tube seed feeders and I've put an old baking tray out with mixed seed on it to try and keep pace with the poor hungry little birds today. The 2 fat ball holders have also had to be refilled once. The water has been topped up too. At least they'll all go to roost tonight with a full belly to keep them warm.
