Hija
I know that I am not on here very often and I really am a dreadful lurker but I never feel that I have much to contribute and don't want to appear daft. I do hope that no-one minds me making this thread.
I am a member of quite a few forums, on which I mostly lurk as well, 4 of which are Proboards and on one of them (I won't give the link) there has been a terrible stink about Polls and people voting for themselves.
Some of the people there were so angry and wanted to know from admin what monitoring options they had in a Poll. Admin there said that they could only see a list of who had voted but not for what they had voted for. One member though said that there was a way to see what people had voted for.
I am very sorry to ask this but is that true? I personally am not in favour of voting for yourself as it is a bit like cheating, but everyone should make their own choice.
Thanks for your help.
Suki

Hi Suki,
It would be great if you would join in more. There are some lovely people on the board and I am sure that they would make you feel very welcome.
Polls - well this question has been asked before, and I don't know on which forum you were but the admin there was correct.
Admin can at all times see the results of a Poll and who has voted on that Poll. We cannot see what people have voted for.
I can only guess at what the other member meant when he/she said there was a way to see what people had voted for. If I look at a Poll and someone votes at the same time then I can see which result has changed. So yes, should people who are authorized to see Poll results want to monitor a Poll, then they could see how someone had voted as well.

Personally, and I have said this before, I would not dream of voting for anything of mine which was entered in a poll, albeit a photo or an entry in the GWD Annual Show, but maybe that is just me I wonder if we could have a poll and see what others think on this subject? And maybe ask Admin not to look until the poll closes then everyone can feel comfortable in being honest about the matter x Tig

I do hope that no-one minds me making this thread. You'll never appear more daft than some of the rest of us so don't worry about it ;D It would be good to see you posting a bit more. I never vote for my own pictures either. I don't imagine anyone else would either to be honest. I don't think it's a really big deal if they did though. The polls and competitions on here are only a bit of fun so I never worry whether I win or not. FA x

It never occured to me to vote for my own photos. Anyway, there are always better ones to vote for. I have to say that it's a bit sad if people vote for their own photos. hardly playing fair is it. However, now I know I may get away with it...................

I have to come clean and say I once did vote for myself. It was a long time ago and I thought it was like when politicians are seen putting in their vote for themselves in an election. Not breaking any rules or anything. It was'nt until I'd done it that I thought mmmm there's something not quite right about what I just did but I wonder if others have done it too. It only happened the once and I thought the mods saw everything, I did wonder if I'd get a pm saying I should'nt have done it.

Ruthie, how could you even contemplate it Like LNG, you'd probably feel more than a bit uncomfortable for doing it later and be wondering if you'd been seen doing it or not and it would nag you for ages!! ;D I really don't think I would feel comfortable voting for myself, I think it's a rather low thing to do. Just a bit of competition fun or not, it's not right.

Well this is my opinion for what it is worth. I think voting for yourself is taking an unfair advantage of fellow members. Of course the competitions are for fun, but there are also prizes to be won.
I do not know who pays for all of this, I rather suspect that admin do it out of their own pockets, but I would be rather miffed if someone won a prize after voting for themselves, if I was paying for it.
Sorry if I have trodden on some toes but unfairness brings me to the boil rather quickly.

Sorry if I have trodden on some toes but unfairness brings me to the boil rather quickly. Pip If I may say so, I think Pip has gone to the heart of this: It should be remembered that some polls and competitions are for prizes. GWD has no income, we levy no membership fee. Some members generously donate prizes, some donate cash to a prize fund. As far as I'm aware, no donor has voted for themselves in a poll to get their money back. I think it's a poor show when, in an attempt to win a prize, a member votes for themself, but that's just my opinon, not a GWD declaration. We have yet to address the issue in the Code as it had not been anticipated as a problem. Maybe we should have a Poll to see how deep the feeling is... OM.

Not good enough Don't be daft Barbara, you have some beautiful things growing in your garden, as good as anyone else Although I agree it is nice to have plenty of piccies of what is in flower, where folk have been and views of peoples gardens, I feel I know the people who I communicate with on here I never think when I post a photo that it will get nominated for POTM, in fact I got quite worried about them being nominated at one point and slowed down my happy snapping activities because I felt a bit embarassed! But I love to share my little wildlife visitors with others not so lucky, and my enthusiasm for the garden and all things growing, and the moon, and the world in general - well you all know what I am like ;D I do agree with OM, that when there are prizes on offer and someone votes for their own entry it is very unfair on other competitors who would deem such a thing to be dishonest. x Tig

I don't think I'd view voting for yourself as dishonest. As LNG said, politicians vote for themselves and to do otherwise would be plain silly. After all they are meant to believe that they are the best option. I can see that it would make some people feel a bit uncomfortable. It's a bit like blowing your own trumpet. This is all just a bit of fun (even when there's a prize) and even if you vote for yourself you'd usually need a few other people to vote for you too before you can win. Best leave it all anon and not worry I'd say.

I think someone would have to be a serious saddo to vote for themselves on any of our competitions Most are for fun and it's not like there's big prizes to be won. Luckily, I think we've offloaded all the saddoes we ever had on here , and now only have nice people who would not dream of doing such an underhand and dishonest thing I hope so anyway! ;D PS - Nice to meet you Suki Now stop lurking and join in. We don't bite cos most of us haven't got the teeth for it! ;D (though some of us have a nasty suck!) ;D ;D ;D

I couldn't care less Who votes for Who-Just joining in is part of the fun --As N O has said--"Most are for fun and it's not like there are big prizes to be won." Just a point though-- Not every member has a good camera or 'an eye' for Photography and may feel that their efforts are not worth Posting. This is just my opinion and you did ask

For some reason, Rudolph seems to think she may have offended somebody with her last posting I can't quite see why myself, but she is sorry she posted it now, and says she was feeling grumpy cos she's got flu and her OH is being helpless and hopeless and a PITA. Get well soon Rudolph (bet you've got a proper red nose now!!) ;D

Gardens! I never thought about this. We only get one vote per pic or what have you so it does not matter that much does it? Most won't do it anyhow. Imho keep it anon and maybe ask people not to do it. Lets not press poor admin into policing the site. Rudolf is that red nose of yours cured again? If not, poke it in a nice hot grogg and stay in bed. As in get well soon Biggs. And Hi suki I hope you find some more time for here now winter is keeping us inside rather than in our gardens.
