Hi All! I have a request on behalf of a friend who is doing the RHS diploma. His project is to do with bumble bees and he'd like to know when you see your first bumble bee and where. I offered to post the request to you lot because I had an idea it would be the sort of thing you'd notice and he can get sightings from all over the country that way. Hope this is the right place to put this thread. Many thanks. Blod

Apparently we may see some early ones soon but most will start to appear in February.

Any kind of bumble bee Blod? Little ones with furry bottoms as well as the big boys?

Aha! I've been looking for this thread - knew I'd seen it somewhere! I saw my first bumble bee on the heather in my garden in Cambridge on 26th January, early afternoon There will probably be a lot more along soon - my winter flowering heathers are always very popular with the early ones.

I'll keep my eyes open too. Usually see Bumble bees quite early if we get a mild sunny day. You can't miss 'em as they're still a bit sleepy and of course there's that buzzing that gets your attention 'cos you haven't heard it for so long!

I just thought I'd bump this up to remind you all to keep your eyes peeled for bumble bees from now on. Juliet came in as the earliest, but we'd still like to know when the rest of you see your first bumble bee. Many thanks

Well Blodau I'm just back from visiting my Daughters for a few days. Today before I got the train we had a dander around her garden and we heard a bee buzzing. We could'nt believe it. She lives in Aughton which is in Lancashire. When we saw it it was hovering in and out of the snowdrops.

I saw my first one on Monday (16 Feb) when I was sitting in my garden (in Kent) having a cup of tea. It took rather a liking to my hair for some reason, but then went on his merry way!

None here either. But then it is either too cold or too wet for them to come out and there are hardly any plants in flower. They would starve. I hope mother Nature keeps them in hibernation for a little longer
