They say we are going to have a good summer this year, so get your bikes out and start peddling. I cycled 22 miles on Sunday with OH on our new tandem. Flippin nora PJ coooooool bike. Have you been on it again I'm seriously thinking about getting a little scooter, OH thinks I'm barmy and not keen really. Anyone on here got a scooter.

The pushbike finally made it off the garage wall yesterday for the first time in two years and I had an enjoyable seven mile ride around the local countryside. Surprisingly I didn't feel too bad afterwards either (apart from being a little saddle sore) so I must be fitter than I thought I was. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif

I am glad you enjoyed your bike ride Spruance. It is great fun because you can enjoy the scenery as well as geting fit.
Took the tandem out last Sunday and it poured with rain and the tandem has no mudguards so my legs and buim got drenched. Still it briughtened up so I was dry by the end of ride if not a bit muddy. We cycled around Ongar in Essex with the Tandem Club. I wonder if that is near FB?

Yes we are quite lucky here PJ as we are only about one mile away from open countryside and the roads aren't too bad either. I had another short (only 5 miles) ride this afternoon, but I didn't go as far as intended as it was headwind heading out and at one point my legs were going like pistons in low gear to achieve not much more than a fast walking pace. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif I would like to go out every day if I can, but wanting and doing are two entirely different things.

I had another short (only 5 miles) ride this afternoon, but I didn't go as far as intended as it was headwind heading out That's the way to do it, headwind out, tail wind back. Doesn't always work. I can remember riding all day to the club teaplace with a gale head wind. Just before tea the wind dropped. After tea, no wind, then it started again in the opposite direction (storm centre had passed). I got home about 11.00pm.

Yes that reminds me of the time, around twenty years or so ago when after meandering around the local villages for an hour, I set off in a generally northerly direction and ended up in Spilsby some seventeen miles away and after a quick circuit ended up at the A158, which I thought would be quite far enough. Up to this point there had been no wind at all whch is why I went so far in the first place, but needless to say on the way back I was almost down to walking pace! Fortunately it was high summer but it was still almost dark when I finally struggled home, having set off originally around 3pm!

They say we are going to have a good summer this year, so get your bikes out and start peddling. I cycled 22 miles on Sunday with OH on our new tandem. I see that the secret hasn't got out yet. The rider on the rear of a tandem does more of the work. That's why I had a young tough forestry worker on the back of my tandem (1950's). We cruised the A11 between Barton Mills and Thetford at around 40 mph, I had to keep using the rear brake to stop him going too fast. If Dave reads this, yes it's Peter from Larkshall

We can manage to whip up a speed on the tandem Larkshall, but I must confess OH does more work than me. He can tell when I drift off looking at all the views, cos we slow down pretty quickly then. We have an old Claud Butler 1938 tandem too which has a foot brake at the back. On no account am I allowed to use it. The new tandem has no brakes for the stoker. You just have to trust your partner on the front. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif

We mostly only cycle on holiday in Germany or France on our raleigh folding bikes, the roads from where we live dont have cycle tracks which is a scandal I think considering the farmer has lots of room either side of the road! abroad is much more cycle friendly I think we once many years ago hired a tandem in Yugoslavia I thought it was great! but kept getting knagged for not peddling enough!!

My daughter in law is doing a charity bike ride in Nov 2011. It is a 10day ride through Kenya - I think she is a bit daunted, but looking forward to the challenge

Just bought myself a crash helmet from Halfords and will be out on my bike later. I'm adding cycling to my running to improve my fitness levels.

Been doing a lot of cycling this Summer but have just broken my bike Rear axle is shot to bits and probably need a new wheel on the back. I've been trying to fix it but haven't managed it.....yet ;D In the meantime, as my bike is old and pretty knackered, I have just ordered a new one ! It's one of these, in black. www.evanscycles.com/products/kona/dew-2010-hybrid-bike-ec021770?query=kona dew Should be here in about a week. Can't wait ! FA x

how'd your bike go, Andy?
I've been seeing a lot of bikes like this, the crossbar is not horizontal...odd looking to see 'em around. Have given plenty of fair maidens a crossbar home...

The bike is fine thanks ! Getting a lot of use this Summer & Autumn and hopefully will continue to do so through the Winter too. I've just bought some new pedals for it - the ones that have special shoes that clip in to stop your feet moving about and I'm building up to cycling to work at my new office, which is 21 miles each way. Won't do it every day but I'm hoping to have a go at it before the real Winter months set it and then hopefully next Spring/Summer, will hopefully be doing it once or twice a week.

Good for you FA! 21 miles each way seems quite a challenge particularly on the way home after a days work. But not so arduous in Spring and Summer.
We've bought yet another tandem on ebay. This one is 1987 Mercian, lightweight and in stunning condition. We are picking it up on Sunday. Now we have to sell our Thron tandem to pay for it!
The plan is to organise a cycling holiday this Spring.
