Hi all, Due to the fact that i LOVE flowers, no part of my garden has been turned over to veg, BUT as an experiment, i will be planting 4 seed potatoes in two compost bags to see whether i will get a good crop. Couple of questions, has anyone done this and what were your results ?? I will be planting first earlies, Maris something or another. Ive started to chit them but im unsure how to plant them. Is it the chit facing up or down into the compost ? When's the best time to plant ? Any help help appreciated ? regards James I have just read this thread cos ive got nothing better to do,at the moment, never bothered before as i have a big garden, and dont have to grow in bags. It doesnt really matter which way up the chit is,they will always come up,they wont go down, potatoes in the fields are planted by machines, they are just dropped into the ground, anyway upwards

Is'nt nature wonderful FB the way it always knows what to do. ;D I sometimes think I worry too much about how things should be instead of just letting them get on with it.

Mine a growing like mad in these compost bags. Ive added extra compost to earth them up twice now. I think i'll leave them for a while and give them a final earthing in a couple of weeks. ;D

I've been waiting since I earthed mine up the last time for them to reappear. Alas they have not. I broggled yesterday but can't find anything at all. I'll have another look today but I fear for them. I think I must have smothered them.

Always leave a bit of green showing LG. One of my bags is fairing better than the other so maybe luck is involved. A couple are showing signs of flowers.

Nope they're completly gone, even the green shoots and leaves have been turned into compost as there is absolutely no sign of them. I can't believe it. It took such an effort to hobble with the bleeding buckets full of compost on crutches to earth them up and I've killed them. Ah well I'll try again next year.

You can try again THIS year, it's not to late for late spuds, but I wonder what happened to the others. ??

When I emptied out the whole of the compost, (into other containers). I found the original potatoes starting to decay but not a single bit of green Barbara. I can only imagine that somehow the weight of the new compost which I added was too much, it was ordinary compost with John Innis no. 3 added. I did'nt realise you could still try again for this year but as I'm so very far behind in the rest of the garden with work to do I'll just leave it.

RF I usually keep back some small potatoes say 6 from the ones that I have grown and I will put them in a tub if the weather turns frosty then I shall bring them indoors and put the tub in the hallway. Last time I did it I kept the spuds in a bag in the fridge salad box to keep them cool, they started to sprout so I planted them but the frost got to them in the GH and killed off the stems and I only got 3 for my effort so I'm not taking any chances this year.

Harvested mine today. Bit dissapointed on the yeald !! Got about a large collender worth of spuds from 2 bags and four tubours. But they are lovely, no disease or slug damage. Notes for next year: 1. Leave a big longer before harvesting. End of June at least. 2. Water more. Even though i watered regulary, the compost today was very dry at the bottom. More water needed next year.
Try them tonight !

Well done Mr. Grinch at least you had success with yours even if your harvest was'nt as big as you'd like.
